Look, obviously the convenience of a person in a car is worth many times the life of a person not in a car. That's just science!

If you make people in cars responsible for the mayhem and death they cause, people will drive slower and more responsibly, and then traffic will be too slow and I can't zoom-zoom in my pollution powered people crusher!

/S, obvs.

People who use cars for personal transportation are sick, and need to be institutionalized for everyone's safety.

I don't really fucking care, tbh.

If you're an ecocidal narcissist, then the sweetest plea I could make will fall on deaf ears. You've already decided your convenience is more important than the environment or anyone else's safety. I just want to make sure you know how much contempt decent people have for you.

You do realize that many people do not have access to public transportation, right? Having a personal vehicle isn't always a choice.

But being a cunt is a choice.

You do realize that many people do not have access to public transportation, right?

And yet the politicians preventing that sleep soundly in their beds every night. Sounds like a skill issue to me.

There is no version of the automobile as personal transportation you can convince me is ethical. Anyone who thinks they're being forced to drive and isn't fighting tooth and nail against the system "forcing" them to drive is just another ecocidal narcissist who values their convenience above anyone else's life.

You need to get out of your echo chamber

That's an absolutely hilarious thing to say in defense of the societal default position. The fact that your echo chamber is pretty much everyone everywhere doesn't make it not an echo chamber.

Life isn't black and white like that.

It actually is. Which is why nobody has any argument in favor of motornormativity that wouldn't completely evaporate if motornormativity weren't the default everywhere.

The fact that you see the issue as a binary choice means you've spent too much time in your "fuck cars" echo chamber.

Your biggest logical fallacy is assuming that everyone who doesn't have a choice but to own a car in order to survive wants things to be that way.

I don't have a choice. I have to cross a highway to get into town, and riding my ebike isn't safe at all. Before that I lived out in the country about 15 miles from the city.

I also vote for every public transit measure my city has, as well as politicians who support increasing public transit. Yet your assertion is that I'm a narcissistic monster who wants the world to burn.

    I don't have a choice.

Because the secret police would kill you if you moved to the other side of the highway? Or do you have a medical condition that can only be treated by herbs growing in that one stretch of suburbia?

There's always a choice. The choice is generally much more difficult and less convenient than doing nothing. So most people choose to think they have no choice.

Lol, depends. Do you mean farmers, miners, loggers, and other people doing important jobs that can't be done in the city? Not at all.

Do you mean wannabe hermit fuckwastrels who live in the middle of nowhere but insist on easy access to all the convenience and safety of modern society and want to force the people living in cities to buy it for them? Then absofuckinglutely.

Yeah that's a real privileged stance you have and you're not a good person for having it.

    As an environmental advocate

You can advocate for the environment or the status quo. Pick one.

But the fact that you even felt the need to say this means you already have, and you picked wrong.

I guess it's easier to imagine everyone who disagrees with mainstream thinking as Hitler when you assume they just want to kill everyone who disagrees with them the way you do.

I also want them to be the front line fighters when the inevitable wars over clean water start. Which is just a way of saying I don't think it's fair that everyone has to suffer the consequences of their stupid, selfish, short-sighted choice.

So yes, anything that stops them would absolutely be "way better", but my personal preference would just be to revoke all non-CDL drivers licenses, invalidate all vehicle registrations made out to an individual instead of an organization, then review the rest to see if they are appropriate to continue or not.

But if the only way to stop the ecocidal narcissists from killing pedestrians and cyclists and degrading the environment was to lock them all up, I consider that less evil than allowing the status quo to continue.

Your inability to imagine anything different from the status quo doesn't mean it would starve people.

Right now, if we got rid of all cars, people would be stranded in anything outside of major cities, and even in most cities there's food deserts. Oh and don't forget all the homeless people who live in their cars, there goes their shelter.

I mean, we can play make believe with a hypothetical world where cars don't exist and there's magical transport that works for individuals as well as groups that is harmless and makes no pollution if you don't like the "status quo" thinking of things like "real world consequences" and "basic empathy" and "understanding other people's living situations", but if you did that you wouldn't want to institutionalize people just for owning a car to survive.

just for owning a car to survive.

No one needs a car to survive. A car is a convenience. Humans existed without them for millennia and if they all disappeared tomorrow we'd be just fine after a short period of chaos where we paid the price for a hundred years of batshit stupid infrastructure development.

But a bunch of whiny, fat ass, lazy assholes would suddenly have to learn that those funny things in the end of their legs are for more than selling pics of online, and a lot of people would suddenly find that they can't demand all the conveniences of modernity while trying to live like a hermit. And I know that for a lot of you that sounds so horrible you'd rather believe that you'd die, but you wouldn't.

Good to know you're satisfied with the homeless living in cars. I find that this argument generally correlates with people who think cops should sweep homeless encampments when they're in tents and not cars (at least in their neighborhood).

I'm not fine with it, I've even been homeless before.

With the way things are now, with the system as it is, people need cars to survive. Sometimes for shelter, sometimes for food, and someone's for their job.

You, being a rabid asshole, are mad about this, and think they should be institutionalized, just because they own a car.

The people living in their cars have enough problems without the short-sighted, privileged, judgemental opinions of people like you to tell them they are monsters for trying to stay alive.

You wanna get mad at something? Get mad at the oil industry. Get mad at the auto industry. Get mad at rich assholes or judges who let people get a slap on the wrist for running people over.

But being acting high and mighty over people trying to survive when you don't have to do the same thing makes you a huge prick, and that's something that hurts any good cause you attach yourself to.

So for the sake of the encouragement and people trying to fix the car situation, shut the fuck up, at least till you get therapy.

If you genuinely have nothing to say about it other than "shut up and accept the status quo" then the ultimate result of you existing is exactly the same as the oil executives, auto sales scum, and permissive, carbrained judges.

Fuck cars, and fuck you for driving one. And fuck anybody who thinks that's too extreme. Continuing to allow the planet to be destroyed for the convenience of lazy fat asses is too fucking extreme.

I can't tell if you're so illiterate and incurious that you genuinely don't know that for most of human history those jobs have been done by people living where the work is,not if you're just a disingenuous fuckhead who was hoping I didn't know that. And I don’t know if you’re just a moron who thinks they’re being funny, or if you really are that horrendously uneducated. Even farmers need to go to town from time to time for supplies, and perhaps to sell their produce. And towns generally aren’t where farms are, since farms, require, y’know, acreage.

As for loggers, they generally worked where they lived because of company towns, which if you’re ignorant of that charming part of human history, were very, very bad.

‘Different from what is’? I thought we were talking about

People who use cars for personal transportation are sick, and need to be institutionalized for everyone's safety.

If that’s the difference you want, to lock up farmers, loggers, rural mail carriers, and the like, then I’d rather not imagine that, thanks.

Curious on your take on what to do with commercial truck drivers. Or do you think things like cut trees and the bulk of most farmers’ produce just magically teleports itself to where it needs to go?

Since you can't understand the difference between "using a vehicle for work" and "personal transportation" there's really not much hope of this conversation being remotely interesting or enlightening.

A farmer driving produce to market in a truck is in no way ethically or functionally equivalent to a wannabe hermit driving 100 miles round trip for their kids pop warner practice in the next county over where they actually have enough people to build a football field.

For the similarly illiterate and unimaginative:

    Delivery vehicles - good

    Work vehicles - good

    Emergency vehicles - good

    Licensed, insured taxis - good

Buses and other mass transit - good

    Personal vehicles - bad

Communities built to be unlivable without everyone having a personal vehicle - bad

People who defend using cars for personal transportation - bad

I know that. But your original statement had no carve-outs, no caveats. You just wanted to lock up every single person with a car. It was only after you got pushback that you ‘permitted’ some people to have vehicles.

Your inability to understand that "personal transportation" isn't inclusive of ambulances and work trucks doesn't mean I didn't say it exactly that way the first time. I didn't break out the crayons to draw you a picture until you made it clear you're illiterate.
