Nillumbik Shire Council in Melbourne's outer north-east says it is "devastated" and has launched an investigation into the incident, which occurred during rabbit-control works carried out across at least 30 local reserves from June to August.

But for the volunteers who had spent months treating local wombats for the potentially deadly skin condition, mange, the council's response has done little to ease concerns about the fate of animals they can no longer find.

I did some contract work in Nillumbik a couple decades ago and Rabbits were an issue then.

We would drive the truck out of the yard in the wee hours of the morning and there were bunnies everywhere.

Playing devils advocate, wombats are excellent burrowers and I am sure they should be able to escape their burrows.

Unfortunately, rabbits are even better burrowers. I’m sure they will create other exits and the existing reinforced exits will provide excellent protection from feral cats and foxes.
