hey there! living abroad is a very attainable goal and comfortable lifestyle.

tldr is get a passport, get any remote job for 10-15 hours a week, move to one of the $500 countries, rest, recuperate, live.

Take it from there without financial pressure weighing you down; build up passive income, get access to better healthcare, great food, world wonders and innumerable other benefits.

If you are an English speaker, you have immediate access to thousands of teaching jobs that pay anywhere from $2000-10000 USD per month.

I must say though, seeing 'Japan' and 'sim card' in the same sentence gives me nightmares... so glad we have esims/global sims now and don't have to deal with the 'tourist sim' nonsense.

As a comparison, I checked the esimplus plan for Indonesia (where we are currently... hi from Balikpapan!) . 15 gb for 30 days costs 2245jpy. On esimdb.com I found StellarSecurity has 10 gb for 1.70eur, which is what I'm using now... I know the yen is in the toilet at the moment, but that's still only 304jpy.

    nice, I was in yogyakarta last year and loved it. are you going on a nature hike or anything for the komodo dragons or giant apes?

    esimplus was cheaper than Japanese and Korean tourist sims I found, and in China bypasses the national Firewall without having to use a VPN, but I can certainly see Indonesia having more affordable prices.

    I still have a physical sim as well, but trust that I'll be bookmarking esimdb for when the esim time rolls around.

    We flew here from Yogya! It's a lovely place, indeed - have been there twice now and can imagine going back. Probably one of the better towns for tourism in Indonesia, but for daily living I probably prefer Jakarta, Makassar, maybe Denpasar if there wasn't so much traffic.

    We just hired a boat yesterday to cruise around the mangroves looking for proboscis monkeys - saw four groups, which was fantastic, but the trees were quite thick so not clear views. An hour boat ride cost 17usd which we split with another couple. Tomorrow we're going to try and see the new capital city that is being built in the middle of nowhere - afaik construction has halted since the recession hit here but a lot seems has been finished... another failed mega-project in the making I'm sure.

    Ah, I was citied out and hsd a great small town time vibing with the thunderstorms.

    that's crazy, i never heard of that new city at all! my neck of yogya was pretty quiet.

    trip's still well, i slid down Mongolia China korea Japan hawaii then Portland, OR, had a friend's wedding to attend, then visiting other friends while renewing my documents, now I'm looking at canada/mexico/botswana, really not sure yet. oh slash Scotland also in the running.

    did the proboscis monkeys seem chill or were they screaming?

    That sounds great! We wanted to do the Beijing to Ulaanbataar railway this year but couldn't fit it in (maybe next year!). Portland is also a lovely place, we had friends in Vancouver WA across the border we stayed with for a couple weeks.

    Botswana is also high on our list but we were tossing up between south America or southern Africa and Americas has won for now. Scotland is amazing and I'm sure you'd have a blast. Canada we've only done BC and Alberta and would love to see the rest (maybe when the USA is less hostile to foreigners we'll spend more time in North America).

    The monkeys were very chill, but also quite shy, when we spotted a group, they'd spot us too and slowly retreat away from view.

    nice, I've considered mongolia-beijing trains often. you know about the 20+ hour wheel change between china/mongolia? about half of the 40-hour ride is waiting fro those wheels to be changed, so I always talk myself out of it before buying a ticket. probably why it took me so long to get to mongolia since the train seems like the coolest transport method but I never wanted to wait for the wheels. which is funny, because I regularly took 24hr beijing-hong kong trains while living in china without blinking an eye.

    It's as bizarre as ever being back in the states, but so many friends moved back to the area at the same time it's been fun hanging out with them, although it's about time for me to be looking at tickets. the whole tense-desperation thing here is seeping into my everyday.
