I make more money than most people in the US, in the top 6% of earners. $2k/month is still a significant amount of money and not something I could afford to do, at least not without significant sacrifice.

That being said, I have a wife and 2 kids I support, and we have a house. A normal house, not extravagant (slightly more than the median house price in the US, which is very high). But all of that does cost a lot of money, so even though the amount I make sounds like a lot, when you actually pay for everything you need to live a modestly comfortable life, it adds up.

If I didn't have anyone else to support and was just living in an apartment, I could probably swing $2k/month, but it's still not insignificant. You could do a lot with that kind of money.

To be honest, someone behaving the way that you describe would make me think that they don't work for their money, or at least, not all of it. Sounds like someone really affluent that has a lot of family money. Normal people in the US generally can't afford to do something like that.
