Anyone who appoints themselves as the sole authority of on what is moral and good is a bad person. That is straight up fascist thinking. There's no wanting to do the right thing here. This is one person's ego driving them to think they knew better than everyone else, and that kind of thinking should not be not be given any grace.

    I give most people grace.

Keeping myself above water, mentally, is a daily routine. I done some stupid, weird shit for the wrong reasons and have been very close to other people who've done similar and worse. The worst part about mental health problems like ours is the inability to see the whole picture when you're inside it.

Maybe he's an asshole, maybe he's going through shit, maybe both. I know for sure that whatever I believe has absolutely no bearing on this situation and everything to do with my own mindset, so I condemn the actions and choose grace.

I can't say I agree. He did think he knew what was good for everyone but I think it truly was "right" in his mind. It's a bizarre and dishonest thing to do, but I think he thought it was justified. He probably won't self reflect but leaving here will make it more likely.

You're both right. He had good intentions, but good intentions implemented in bad ways can be - and often are - just as harmful as bad intentions. If you want to be beneficial for society, you can't just hope for the best: you need to actively assess whether your actions are helping, and course correct if they aren't. It's a tiresome, often thankless job, but it's required to do actual good.
