Why is Kansas city in Missouri instead of Kansas?

It straddles the state line. Partly in Kansas, partly in Missouri. A few other cities are like this, like Memphis and Texarkana.

KCK is mostly industrial and not worth visiting. The city itself is on the Missouri side. Interestingly, despite this the Kansas side attracts far more wealth as it sprawls further Southwest.
