Your cat is gorgeous! Much like people, they have different personalities and changes like strangers can be scary. My fluffy boy sounds a lot like yours. I'm in the outer south east, and we have adopted and support One at a Time Pet Rescue. They do some mapping to ensure good fits, but sometimes things don't work according to plan. Our two youngest hate each other, but can co-exist.
