Isn't an atheist jew just a jew?

Ernest Krausz; Gitta Tulea (1997). Jewish Survival: The Identity Problem at the Close of the Twentieth Century; [... • The yarmulke is a religious symbol, not an ethnic one. And since Mr Crustacean is wearing it on a date, and not just to temple, he is an orthodox jew. I should have said "atheist orthodox jews", but I was concerned that the commenter wasn't well educated enough to know what that meant.
