I think the sad truth is it will take a few more deaths on the good side for them to be sufficiently radicalized. Once they are, and stsrt fighting back seriously, the deaths will continue but on both sides.

TL;DR A livable society needs an active, engaged citizenry fighting for good things to happen. When a dictatorship arrives, that society has a lot of tools they can use to resist, for the simple fact that any dictatorship is basically just a handful of people at the top who are dependent on everyone else doing what they say. They're a lot more fragile than they seem.

Why not? It's hard to know exactly what the state of things really is, but to me the best outcome would be that the current regime is removed through an election and their attempts to weasel out of it fail, like last time. Isn't avoiding this the whole reason they are trying to escalate?
