I typed Lazy but my autocorrect didn't agree.
You mean Lazy
Harpoon 2 — Mark up to 4 files and jump between them instantly. Once you start using this, you can’t go back.
You can replace harpoon with native argslist, if you don't need any advanced features. Works great for me. Interesting that you feel the need to use both Harpoon and Snipe, though. I max put like 4 different buffers into "Harpoon" and if I need to navigate elsewhere I just use my picker (mini.pick) to search through files or grep for words.
Lazy-load everything. Most plugins don’t need to load until you actually use them.
If you don't have a lot of heavy plugins IMO you don't really need to lazy load. Ever since I switched to 0.12 (lazy -> native pack) I don't lazy load anything and honestly I see absolutely no difference and you avoid a lot of the complexity.
vim-commentary — gcc to comment a line. Classic.
This is native in nvim already.
auto-session — Restores your buffers and layout when you reopen a project.
You can also achieve this with native nvim functionality if you don't need anything complex.
nvim-ufo — Better code folding with treesitter.
I'm curious why the need for this vs native functionality?
That and I think nvim 12 will make Last.vim obsolete.
Fuck man I thought my config was usable
I personally think kickstart.nvim is a great place to start. It is not as complex as the various Neovim distros out there, because its a single file but it is still very usable. Due to this approach it feels a lot easier to change something, because there is only one place. TJ also has a video on kickstart.nvim where he explains it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m8C0Cq9Uv9o&t=103s One thing I also did in the beginning is installing different versions site-by-site e.g. Kickstart.nvim, LazyVim, AstroVim etc. and switch between them using NVIM_APPNAME
Looks nice. One thing I noticed is lsp-zero. Starting from v0.11 you don't need that anymore. VonHeikemen (the developer of lsp-zero) even says that on the Github page and has some links how to migrate to the native lsp commands of Neovim. Maybe an excuse for you to tweak your config ;)
@codeinabox loved it :) I've been thinking about switching to neovim for a long time, but the configuration doesn't seem so straightforward. Thanks for the good references, and sharing the experience. I'll give it a try soon :)
i’m tired boss, and i’m worried about bloat.
Yes. I now just git clone into the pack directory.
None of the plugin managers has been as reliable, for me.
This is a helpful guide!
i was expecting more a human review than an AI context dump, but whatever. i’m conflicted. i’ve been through my share of vim plugin manager migrations, including the recent big change to Lazy. i’m tired boss, and i’m worried about bloat. i hope this feature works out, but i’m gonna let it bake for a while.
All that is missing now, is a link to the git repository.
Everybody’s config is usable to them. Cool to share these as there is always inspiration hiding in another’s config. A bespoke config is really the way to go though. My config feels perfect for me. People using distros doesn’t make sense to me.
this feature is so satisfying to use
Had no clue you could do this with neovim! Nice.
There are few things more infuriating to me than when a package manager doesn’t work well.
Like, that’s the job. That’s why you’re here. I get why dependencies are hard to calculate but that doesn’t make it less annoying when the software is bad at it.
I haven’t used Luarocks but I feel like Ruby had some serious package management issues before RubyGems became more stable (a long time ago), and it was so annoying.
I'm being hyperbolic but I do genuinely dislike Luarocks.
Everywhere I've used them I'm met with issues. May they be incorrect versions being downloaded, Luarocks just not doing anything but giving no error, or the worse problem none of the packages working correctly. Client using luarocks for windows and it not working or the correct Luarocks just having a fit on windows too. Glad for wsl2 when a client needs me to use windows
Lua can be quite hyper specific to each usecase too. It's supposed to be. This leads to a disconnect between the generic packages and the Lua code used for neovim, the love engine, Warcraft and Roblox Moding, or whatever.
Lua does have inherit issues that make package management difficult. Each version of Lua is intended to be its own segregated ecosystem. This is a major strongsuut for Lua as it can change wildly while devs can know their version will be supported, and stay stagnant (on purpose). However, this hurts the package ecosystem as it can be difficult to support each Lua leading to an even smaller number of packages.
I've never had a good experience when using luarocks or anything that requires Luarocks.
Im curious, why do you think this way?
I fucking hate luarocks. Seriously fuck lua rocks. Lua shouldn't have a package manager. I don't have any solid reason for that and will support any other language having one but Lua? Nope. No package manager for you. You've lost that privilage.
Nevermind, I solved my own problem. it was right there in the online help for sub-replace-expression. The syntax to access the nth match in a \= expression is submatch(n).
So in my example, the correct line to achieve what I want is:
:let i=1 | %g/\(foo\|bar\)1/ s//\=submatch(1) . i/g | let i+=1
All I had to do was keep reading instead of skimming the documentation 🙂
I'd just use awk.
He talked about this in a interview recently ! Echasnovski (mini.nvim creator): "gpanders is WRONG About the Setup Call" (allegedly)
Using single vim.pack.add() call to load all necessary plugins at once and later configure in a series of require() calls
How about not using require for configuration at all? Although I wouldn’t expect it from this particular author - he shoves require().setup even into plugins that literally have nothing to configure and should just work.
The whole thing is a remnant of an old misinformed plugin template repository made by someone with no knowledge of vim startup sequence.
In case it can save you few more lines, here is what I use to automatically save the cursor position when a buffer is closed:
autocmd!
autocmd BufReadPost * call setpos(".", getpos("'\""))
augroup END
