In response to an issue opened on GitHub discussing the recent founder's involvement in endorsing a far-right party in Sweden, a developer wrote this as the company's statement:

Hi,
Mullvad was founded with a strict and focused mission: making mass surveillance and online censorship ineffective. That is what we as an organisation have always focused on, and will continue to do.
As an employer we have always made a point of welcoming new colleagues from across the political spectrum. Some of us eat meat. Some of us believe that is murder. Some of us dream of open borders (, and Daniel happens to be one of them.) Some don't.
Daniel and I founded Mullvad because we have very similar opinions on privacy, mass surveillance and censorship. There are issues where we fundamentally disagree, as I'm sure do our colleagues - with us and with each other.

Speaking as a private individual

I don't know much about Örebropartiet, and therefore don't have a firm or complete opinion yet.

What I do have a firm opinion on is the value of deferring judgement when priors suggest one doesn't have a complete picture, as well as tolerating differences of opinion as much as humanly possible. I am dismayed with the increasingly anti-intellectual political climate in the world.

On a more positive note, I am very thankful that my colleagues and I are able to live these values in our daily work, protecting the right for people to express things we don't agree with.

Being in a tolerant and intellectually open environment is also liberating and promotes truth seeking. The more people do this, the better a place the world will be.

Finally, it should be obvious that Daniel's private donation to a political party is not part of Mullvad's values or mission, in the same way that someone's opinions on animal rights, taxes or public healthcare policy isn't.

Cheers,
Fredrik Stromberg

They also added:

Personally, I don't support Daniel's decision to endorse the party either.

Mullvad also made a comment on X:

Mullvad is a political company. We fight for freedom of speech, freedom of information and the right to privacy. These are firmly held values of the founders of Mullvad.

Mullvad protects the right for people to express things we don't agree with. We protect the right of everyone to access views we don't agree with.

We also live these values by being tolerant in our daily work. Everyone is welcome to collaborate with Mullvad if they share these narrow core values. As employees, contractors, customers, suppliers, lobbyists, campaign partners or whatever it might be. No matter what their other opinions are and no matter whether the founders or anyone else in Mullvad dislike them. The founders themselves fundamentally disagree on several important issues.

This is what allows us to advance our common causes. Being in a tolerant and intellectually open environment is also liberating and promotes truth seeking.

The more people do this, the better a place the world will be.

It should be obvious that Daniel's private donation to a political party is not part of Mullvad's values or mission, in the same way that someone's opinions on animal rights, taxes or public healthcare policy isn't.

That said, if you no longer want to be a Mullvad customer for philosophical reasons, we think it's important to honor that, and will gladly refund you.

(Interesting that it didn't show up here beforehand...)

The IT company Mullvad’s founder Daniel Berntsson is behind a giant donation to the populist Örebro Party, which advocates “comprehensive re-immigration” from Sweden. “It’s sad that it’s needed,” he told Flamman.

DNS issues?? (feddit.uk)

I'm having trouble with web browsing in my setup:

Pixel 8 GrapheneOS Ironfox Mullvad VPN WiFi or Mobile data

Websites habitually don't load, or take a really long time to load. Often if I disconnect Mullvad they go through to the page immediately. I'm guessing it's a DNS issue as I'm getting can't find address type messages in the browser. Is anyone else caught on this at the moment?

Have tried different server locations in Mullvad but same issues.

Cheers!

Hi folks, I recently switched to Mullvad Browser and I like it. However, I have a hard time getting used to the minimal extensions included (and hard recommendation not to install any more not to add to the fingerprint). Do y'all really not use any in-browser password manager?

Right now, I run my PWM in a separate window, so I can just copy-paste, but autofill sure is a nice utility.

Thanks for your considerations.

A recently discovered bug in Android 16 allows any app to leak traffic outside the VPN tunnel.

The bug was reported to the Android Security Team, but was closed as Won’t Fix (Infeasible) [...] In contrast, GrapheneOS, a security-focused Android-based OS, quickly patched the issue in its codebase.

A mitigation is possible, but is quite technical in that it requires USB debugging to be enabled on the device in order to run the following Android Debug Bridge (adb) commands:

adb shell device_config put tethering close_quic_connection -1

adb reboot

Edit: seems to be back up

Edit2: some servers still seem to have DNS related problems, now on smartphone too. At least one application wasn't able to connect to the internet, reporting inability to resolve domain names.

I'm experiencing problems on my Linux PC. Starting about 50 minutes ago, some websites cannot be reached, my package manager cannot connect to its mirrors and ping doesn't resolve domain names into IP addresses. Some people of Reddit seem to be reporting similar issues.

How about people here?

If you use #Mullvad VPN (and if you don't, I don't know what you're doing with your life), #YouTube subtitles might not work because #Google is a great company, 100% ethical #sarcasm. To fix it, switch to weird countries like Cyprus.
You can always use the extension to change only Youtube.

Hi all,

I've opted to use another VPN provider due to costs, but I want to use Mullvad's DoH servers to take advantage of their blocklists (and reputation). I think this would make me stand out compared to users of the VPN, but blocking domains would improve my browsing experience and thwarts other non-browser stuff on my devices (OS telemetry and tracking, etc). Is this setting recommended as a matter of privacy/security?

Thanks in advance for any help and discussion.
