And this is why all these "cost of NAS vs cost of X/Y cloud platform" comparisons don't really matter, in my opinion. Because putting your storage on a cloud platform has no guarantee of safety and every reason for them to milk you. With the good prices a couple years back you could have matched this storage for less than $500 CAD up-front and put a NAS in a closet. Now with higher prices, perhaps less so, but all the more reason to worry.

I am altering the deal. Pray I don't alter it any further.
Cloud just means it's on someone else's computer. Which can change. The good part is the lead time for the change, vs. just suddenly cutting it down and charging for over use, which they probably could have done in the fine print that no one reads.
I use cloud for one purpose - backups, and they're encrypted. And if anything happened to the service providing that, I'd just find a new one.
Whoa that's huge. That's 4TB
How many does the update introduces?
Without clicking through; is this not just Data Validation, or something from that same menu group?
I remember using that to keep track of my gear in tabletop RPGs, like, nearly 20 years ago. 😶

Huh, banning words doesn't stop people from using them. Who'da thought?
Six months later, Microsoft is removing the things that made “Microslop” stick
pulling the Copilot button from Snipping Tool completely and quietly renaming it to “Writing tools” in Notepad for everyone, not just Insiders.
Microsoft also backed off auto-installing the Microsoft 365 Copilot app on Windows 11 during March
That's nice
they deserve that one

Microslop? The makers of Microslop PedOS 11?
Just end it already.
So messed up. Had Microsoft just stuck to web standards for their engine, it wouldn’t have mattered when it was retired. Instead they chose to try to lock companies in, and the companies fell for it.
To put some numbers around the progress the ecosystem has made, there are only 58 MV2-based extensions in the Edge Add-on Store with any meaningful usage.
My guess: one of them is uBlock Origin, and that is all that counts. Well, as wise people wrote elsewhere, Edge's purpose is to download Firefox or LibreWolf.
The current version is just in office and home, this announcement extends it to allow for specific on-site spaces/buildings which for large campuses is advantageous. I haven’t seen anything that says it will directly track and report your location Outside of the generic ones that an admin configures like the “Studio B” example in the article. It uses pretty benign signals to boot: a corporate WiFi connection, a specific peripheral like a monitor, or wake from sleep (which Teams already does for normal presence and presumably to note the absence of other location signals). Microsoft says it won’t track specific desks, offices, or floors but I’m guessing if an admin wanted to put the effort in that could be setup within the limits of how many locations are available to configure.
Wouldn't it be sufficient to just make a status "available on site" and not track the actual position?
This feature has been around for a while, at least the last year in our tenant as a voluntary feature and I genuinely like it to know if someone is in the office to help with something only according our on site systems or teleworking. Now we are unique since we have an air gapped system we need to maintain in addition to our internet connected system so there’s a real benefit to knowing if someone is around to work on an on-site issue.
If the concern though is that your employer is tracking you then the issue isn’t that Teams supports a location feature, it’s that you work for a shitty employer that doesn’t trust you and give you agency to do your best work. No feature in a productivity suite is going to change that, and it’s likely they are tracking work location anyways through things like VPN logs. This doesn’t change that.
Last stage: An OS dedicated only to the AI.
Not if you don't use office. Haven't for years. The alternatives are pretty decent.
Just stop it already.
The world is full of makers. Only a few make the world.
Surface Laptop Ultra is for them.
I think I may go throw up after reading that.
And with all-day battery life[ii],

On standby/sleep mode with no one touching it all day?
I’m glad the article touches on microslops history of ignoring or denying the hugs researchers have done everything they can to ‘responsibly disclose’.
It would be interesting to get what happened from this researchers side, there are lots of cases where a researcher finds something, reports it, tries to get it fixed only to get jerked around by M$.
Even still, let’s assume the researcher did just put it out there, that’s still pretty decent, considering there are groups who you can sell these things too, and it’s possible the exploit was already being used before the disclosure anyway.
I would be sad to see Github go. It has two major advantages for any Microsoft hater:
-
If you use only the basic Git features to host your open-source projects, it's totally free and Microsoft collects essentially zero monetizable data on you.
-
It's totally trivial to abuse it to serve up files - including enormous ones. I use it as my primary DEB and RPM repos, and to share photos and videos online, since it's CORS-compliant.
In other words, you get really useful features for free, you abuse Microsoft's resources and they get nothing in return. What's not to love eh?
