I think this is more of a over simplified feel-good story for staunch anti-US activists. My understanding is that Russia is gaining alot from this war, but China seems to be suffering due to it.

This is at least true in China. Chinese Internet censorship is quite famous but if you have a foreign SIM then you are not subject to the firewall.

I don't know the actual answer, but my guess is that the eSim is from a different country and thus can get through block filters. If the cell tower is down, it probably won't work though.

Question from the uninformed: how do eSIMs get around the shutdown if internet and cell networks? Satellite (Starlink)?
