Hi. Is anyone else having problems recently with Fedia not remembering your login? I have to log back in every couple of hours. It used to be that Fedia would keep me logged in for weeks/months. I think it started a few days ago. I think around the same time as the bot protection came online. Maybe it's related?

Where up until recently images just loaded, now I have to click the little icon to toggle 'show original image' and click that, which opens it in a new tab. Any thoughts and how I can fix that?

I've got Auto media preview ticked and Show thumbnails unticked in settings.

Have KES installed. Deactivating it doesn't change anything

I finally had a chance to battle the scrapers and bots and crawlers enough that I can open the instance to the public again. Thanks for the patience.

The mag is reachable and I am subscribed. But if I try to crosspost this:

https://fedia.io/m/humanrights@crazypeople.online/t/4433054/How-paper-cheques-are-critically-important-to-our-human-right

to !belgium@europe.pub, it’s impossible. I was able to cross-post to a few other places, so it’s uniquely a problem with europe.pub.

(edit)
It looks like the problem is that the pull-down list has a fixed limit on the number of choices, and belgium@europe.pub does not make the cut even when it is fully specified. It’s quite aggrivating that the first half of the list space is wasted on irrelevant junk (random, pets, etc).

Question About Links and Voting Rules

Hi everyone. I have a question about the rules and would like to understand them better.

If someone posts content and includes a link to their own website simply to show the original source and allow others to verify the information, is that considered self-promotion or spam?

Recently, I did something similar and received a 24-hour restriction for supposedly engaging in “self-voting.” However, I did not ask anyone to vote, upvote, or artificially interact with my post.

What exactly is considered “self-voting” in this situation? And if there is uncertainty about whether a rule was violated, wouldn’t it be better to warn the user or ask for clarification first?

I’m simply trying to understand the rules better so I can avoid similar issues in the future. Has anyone else experienced something similar?

I can’t be hallucinating. fedia.io/m/law seems to have existed according to lemmyverse or something, IIUC.

Not sure who to reach out to, but I've somehow become subscribed to a defunct magazine and now I have no way to unsubscribe from it. Any help? (the magazine in question is boardgames@feddit.de). Thanks!

I am trying to block the Lemmit Online bot because I don't want to see those posts, but I cannot view their account page. My guess is that the bot has so many posts that Mbin can't handle it.

https://fedia.io/u/@bot@lemmit.online

Is there another way I can block that account? Or can the error be fixed so I can block it myself?

Why does this give a 404 error?:

https://fedia.io/m/opendata@lemmy.sdf.org/t/2724091/Why-is-train-data-shared-with-the-Belgian-gov

That was a post that I made to a Lemmy community that was hosted by a server that has been down for over a month. Of course there is no direct access to lemmy.sdf.org, but fedia.io should have its own cached version. It accepted my post, I kept a copy of the link, and now the link is unreachable, even when I am logged in.

I suppose it’s another bug in mbin.

Many thanks to the very responsive mbin team.

Fedia update (fedia.io)
submitted 6 months ago by to c/fedia@fedia.io

Ok, there are three problems going on. First, the site has been intermittently super slow. This is happening because of some database locking conflicts and long running queries. I don't have this fully mitigated yet, but I know what I need to do and just need to get it scripted so it can recover automatically and gracefully.

My attempts to solve the prior problem broke federation by causing the messenger services to think they didn't have a connection to the database. This should be fixed now, and now that I know it happens, I can mitigate it in the future.

The other problem is with only being able to go back one to three pages (some times the first page is all you get). This is a known issue in the new version of mbin and the devs are going to revert the pagination scheme to the prior version until the bugs get worked out. In the mean time, if you click on "combined", you will be able to go back for miles (or kilometers).

Newest threads are nearing 12 hours. Sorry, @jerry@fedia.io. Is this also a problem with other mbin instances?

A few magazines are printing their information backwards. First time I'm seeing this.

17

According to lemmyverse, fedia.io has a Thinkpad magazine. But I cannot find it.

Don't know if this is an ongoing update. But the navigation changed today. Going to page 2 of a feed doesnt work - button for pg2 is gone, or doesn't show up.

I posted the linked thread in !dabradio. There are zero comments in my view from fedia.io. However, when logged into another account, I can see a reply in that thread. The reply is from 4 days ago -- much longer than I would expect from a network syncing lag.

Not the most urgent thing but I've noticed it for maybe a week now.

21

It has weather accounts for, what seems like, every single city in the US and the microblog feed is absolutely spammed by it. It doesn't seem like fedia supports blocking other instances, only accounts, but I don't want to have to manually block every single account from that instance.

Please defederate from it. It doubtful that it adds any value.

Anubis works well for a few hours, the slows the site to a crawl. I will be removing it first thing in the morning. My apologies.

23

Hi all. I've implemented anubis in front of fedia.io in an attempt to mitigate the absolutely insane amount of crawlers hammering the site. I have also reenabled anonymous access, hoping that anubis will be effective at keeping the bots out and letting legit people in.

For reference, I run 17 different instances*. All are using a common postgres database server, running on a latest gen AMD Epyc server with 48 physical/96 logical cores. When I enabled anonymous access previously, fedia.io would consume 6 times the amount of database resources as all the other 16 instances using the database server combined. It's off the hook absurd.

So far, it's going ok with anubis in place and anonymous access. I'll see how it performs over the next day or so.

(Not sure if I need to tag @jerry@fedia.io, but just in case)

I seems like you're managing fedia.io's site certificate manually which is a huge pain in the ass. In case you're unaware, there is a small utility called Certbot which, after a little configuration will automatically renew a Letsencrypt certificate on a set schedule. Could save a ton of headache.
