Hi, I'm a lemmy.ml admin. The one mod of this community has been inactive for years so i'm filling in here.

I just removed a bunch of posts linking to brand-new (ranging from days-to-months-old) Debian derivatives.

Expanding on what I wrote in a PM to the person who posted these:

i am quite certain that most of these distros are not things which should be recommended to anyone. the barrier to entry with LLMs has gotten so low, anyone can make a garbage distro which they'll soon abandon, and worse anyone can also make malware with a shiny website and write posts on a bunch of blogs to entice people to try it.

getting even a few users to try it could be quite lucrative: when someone boots a malicious iso it can pillage their disk.

so, I propose that, going forward people should not post links to new Debian derivatives here if they are not providing at least either a personal or 3rd-party endorsement of the credibility of the project.

if anyone (with a substantial good-judgment-indicating posting or commenting history) wants to be made a mod of this community, let me know.

Containerized Debian package builds, artifact diffs, and automated maintenance, test running, new upstream imports and more. If you previously struggled with .deb work, this might make things a lot easier now.

Use case:

Start aptitude, search for foobar (/, foobar).

Start iterating through the list of packages found until somehow, someday, you can find something that is actually about foobar and not about Rust:

Since I'm a new moderator here I figured I should actually install Debian, but I decided to do it with a twist.

I got the idea from here: https://codeberg.org/Calamares/calamares/issues/1580

It's actually not too hard to install multiple Linux distros sharing the same Btrfs partition, which means you don't have to preallocate space.

Default Calamares mount.conf here https://codeberg.org/Calamares/calamares/src/branch/calamares/src/modules/mount/mount.conf#L50-L57

My 40_custom file:

#!/bin/sh
exec tail -n +3 $0
# This file provides an easy way to add custom menu entries. Simply type the
# menu entries you want to add after this comment. Be careful not to change
# the 'exec tail' line above.
menuentry "Kubuntu" --class kubuntu --class ubuntu --class os {
 insmod part_gpt
 insmod btrfs
 search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root c9710fb0-4ebb-4335-a58a-4176d894dcf9
 linux /@/boot/vmlinuz root=UUID=c9710fb0-4ebb-4335-a58a-4176d894dcf9 ro rootflags=subvol=@ quiet splash
 initrd /@/boot/initrd.img
}

I was disappointed that os-prober didn't work.

I installed debian for a friend who is not techy. They've been accepting the updates as and when offered. Now their /boot is full. I'm assuming they need to run

apt autoremove --purge

Or similar. But is there a way you automate this? Otherwise debian with a boot partition seems to have a self destruct timer!

Advice appreciated!

Dear Debianites

This is the official call for artwork proposals for the forky cycle. For the most up to date details, please refer to the wiki^1. At the same time, we would like to thank Elise Couper for creating the Ceratopsian theme for trixie^2.

So, if you would like (or know someone who would like) to create a desktop look and feel that will be seen by trillions of people, be sure to send in your artwork ASAP!

[full message]

Deadline for submissions: 2026-09-12

The artwork is usually picked based on which theme looks the most:

  • "Debian"

(Admittedly not the most defined concept, since everyone has their own take on what Debian means to them.)

  • plausible to integrate without patching core software

(As much as we love some of the insanely good looking themes, some would require heavy GTK+ theming and patching GDM/GNOME.)

  • clean / well designed

(without becoming something that gets annoying to look at a year down the road. Examples of good themes include Emerald, Homeworld, Joy, Lines, softWaves and futurePrototype)

For more information / details, please post to the Debian Desktop^3 list, to which the reply-to for this mail has been set.

-Jonathan, on behalf of the Debian Desktop team

Of the desktop environments i've tried, i prefer Cinnamon overall. But i find that i'd rather use the KDE or Mate versions of some programs. I don't need Nemo when i'd rather use Thunar, or Gnome Characters when i prefer mate-character-map or kcharselect.

Is there any reason i can't start with nothing that's specific to any one DE, then install whatever i need to have Cinnamon applets with the Mate and KDE programs i want? I don't expect this to be easier than picking one DE and sticking with that, but is it so much harder that it's not worth the trouble to have my computer so customized? How common is it to use a custom blend like this?

This was sparked when, while cleaning up my system that still has similar programs from several DEs, i accidentally broke Cinnamon and had to reinstall it, complete with everything i'd removed in favor of some other DE's version of a program.

What window managers are recommended for situations like this? I've always used whatever comes with my DE, without really being aware of the window manager. How does that affect what display manager i need?
