Cool, for the curious,

Flying insects use moonlight to navigate. Since the moon is always above them, they orient themselves so that the light shines on their backs. That’s how they stay upright in flight.

Moonlight contains ultraviolet (UV) and infrared wavelengths because it is merely reflected sunlight. Insects cue on UV, believing it to be the moon. When artificial lights transmit UV they look like moonlight so insects orient their backs to it. Consequently they circle the light and even flip upside down when the artificial light is pointing up to the sky!

Incandescent lights transmit UV but LEDs do not. Insects are far less attracted to LED.

I would just like to call out that the distinguishing properties of this (possibly) emerging species are emergent properties.

As a former worker at a big tech company filled with morons who thought that "emergent" was a synonym for "emergency", it delights me when the word can be used correctly.

The GPS rocks logged their own movements on December 4 and December 20, and people watched stones move in person on later days.

"We may be the first human beings to witness this. Anyone making the obvious Spongebob reference will be fined."

"Why don't we take the rocks... and push them somewhere else?!"

    "God dammit, Kevin."

Steady light winds of roughly four to five meters per second, little more than a stiff breeze, drove those floating panels across the meltwater. Where a panel met a rock, it pushed. The stones did not roll or tumble. They were bulldozed along the saturated mud at two to five meters per minute, often for only a dozen or so minutes before the ice stalled or shattered.

Something about that imagery gave me the giggles.

Now me, I have a quibble. She says "physicists don't know" but they do, today. They didn't know back then, partly because they weren't actual physicists in the scientific sense, they were more like noblemen-philosophers who wanted to seem learned and spent the time and money making themselves seem learned while being wrong about pretty much everything. It's a miracle any actual advancement of human technology and understanding ever came out of any of them.

To illustrate the point, look again at the Lord Kelvin interview. He says it can't be done, he gives a vague reason with no evidence to support it, no facts, just him wielding the weight of Someone Who Is Listened To.

relatively simple to synthesise without controlled precursors

I guess that synthetic opioids don't need any opium containing substances? All of those would be controlled precursors?

Reports have been received that these compounds are particularly dangerous to police officers, and that merely looking at a powder that resembles one of these compounds is enough to cause an officer to immediately die of an overdose.

    Stay safe!
