YES. That the threat, even if benign, of opening up explicitly to agentic slopping is real, is my feeling & understanding, thanks. I'm so glad that I have the documented historical perspective mostly from having read one book, yeah I know, but for those interested in the history I urge folks to read 'The Reverse Centaur's Guide to Life After AI' by Cory Doctorow.

Invitations to monetize at the expense of a product (and industry) and that of its users, (& eventually, very soon) vendors, investors & other partners and stakeholders and programmers! -- enshittification -- is in fact monetization. If it doesn't seem that it has happened, that's irrelevant because it is happening (in the absence of all due public oversight and sane, legitimate, critically necessary, transparent public regulation).

GOP Convention Googlers Being Redirected to Info on the Epstein Files

Internet pranksters have successfully been redirecting people searching for information about the upcoming midterm GOP convention to the Justice Department’s website about the Epstein Files.

A website purporting to be the Republican National Committee’s official convention page is one of the top results when searching Google or other web browsers for information about the event. The catch, however, is that it’s a dummy website that simply takes users to the DOJ’s Epstein File dump.

The New York Times reported on the internet sleight of hand on Friday, noting “It wasn’t a hack,” as many first thought.

    https:// gopdallas2026.com

“The real convention site, at gopconvention.com, remains operational, prominently featuring an outline of Texas and this bold claim: ‘The Golden Age of America Has Just Begun,’ explained the report, adding:

“ Some users searching for the site on Google, however, were directed to the impostor website that earned a spot much higher in search results than the real site.

“ Google’s preview of the fake page promises 'details about the 2026 RNC Midterm Convention at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, Sept. 9-10 including registration, VIP experiences'.”

Hi! The Oxygen 16 OTA rendered the touchscreen on my 12 Pro unusable and it took weeks to qualify me for repair return, then their service contractor had the phone for a month without communication, then they shipped it back without packing material in a smashed box left outdoors in double-digit-below-zero weather without labeling warning not to do that, and they had removed and retained the SIM tray rendering the phone inoperable in any event. I had to buy a third party SIM tray, then mine arrived back from them after weeks of numerous unanswered emails, followed by an offer of a $10 gift voucher. On balance, entirely awful experience.

I live in a remote, rural area where being without reliable communication is death-defying.

That was about three weeks ago and now the same thing is happening: the touchscreen is becoming unresponsive. I can turn the display off but it only comes on after random number of attempts. I could shut down to bootloader (I think? I get that confused with Recovery. It's the one with language selection.) but then I can't get it to properly reboot because that too requires a tap.

When I can get it to reboot the touchscreen sometimes works fine for awhile (a shrinking while). But sometimes not. Attempting to reboot is taking up a large part of my day.

Thinking of a Pixel 10; any thoughts?

Any strongly-held suggestions, particularly on my backup/restore options, going to a different phone?

Very sad to leave OnePlus. We have had several. I feel they owe me a new phone. I'd be happy with a reconditioned 12 or up, if it just worked. But I am not envisioning that likelihood.
