what i heard was that ai companies now push for regulation to legitimize themselves in front of the law. that saves ai companies from the state being like "yea the party's up we stop this and crack down on it"

same happened to bitcoin.

but idk shit :)

It will work aswell, although the discord-wap author also made discord-j2me which should work on you t310 and it has way more functionality.

i'll post an update when my ericsson w580 arrives and i toy around with it

    🤯 2

I finally finished a months long project consisting of a lot of research and help by a wonderful community.

I recently bought this Nokia 7110 because i thought the spring loaded keyboard cover is the coolest thing ever.

Apprently it's the first phone ever with a WAP Browser and it connects via CSD (Circuit-Switched-Data - basically calling a modem that transfers data via sound on the phone line)

This technology is basically dead in the big 26.

Over at r/vintagemobilephones i found an enthusiastic community that keeps these devices alive.

A user named bs0dd wrote a comprehensive guide on how to set up a WAP gateway and a CSD dial-in number.

I went through many SIM-cards to test it but ultimately failed at setting up the dial-in.

Through dumb luck Reddit user 15pmm01 realized that there's still a working dial-in number in Poland of all places.

As soon as that worked the fun began.

I immediately set up discord-wap and vibe-coded a Singal-CLI bridge, which gives this phone all abilities I wouldn't want to miss on the go. (Apart from Navigation, a Camera... yknow xD)

So yea... i am rlly happy this took an end.

I'm about to set up my own WAP Services and have fun with it :D

there's discord-wap which is a self hosted discord bride that translates discord into wml 1.1 which is readable by wap browsers

i vibecoded a signal-cli bridge but it's embarassing to say the least and it's a security nightmare (at least it works)

depending on what kind of phone you use there's either a csd or gprs connection.

    both need a working gateway

a user named bs0dd made a comprehensive guide on how to set up a gateway and even setting up your own dial-up connection for older csd phones.

csd is hard to setup though, in my country (germany) it only works with vodafone sim cards or (as i currently do it) you can connect to a foreign dial-up connection, some of these still exist lol

i would suggest looking into the reddit community /r/vintagemobilephones and especially their discord. the community is very active and currently still working on projects

i'm just trying to be brief: the amount of space for golfing far exceeds what is currently being used for wind and solar combined. Space is not an issue and not a real concern. Every free roof can handle solar panels, it is essentially unused space and it bothers no one.

Also what's wrong with using an activist site as a source if their information is factual?

then the heatwave thingy: those "precautions" will happen several times. Rivers are getting so dry that european countries now lifted the sunday-driving ban for trucks because shipping isn't reliable.

In summers we produce so much electricity that the price per kwh goes negative atp and we actually have to turn off power plants remotely (which is easy to set up, i do this for a living) - if we build enough infrastructure to have overproduction in winters and enough storage we're set.

idk why people get so defensive and emotional over nuclear if there's just cleaner and cheaper options on hand

Commission President von der Leyen announces a ready solution for age verification that will enable anonymous surfing and hold platforms accountable.

The era of non-binding appeals to large tech corporations seems to be over in Brussels. In a joint statement on Wednesday, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen (CDU) and Vice-President Henna Virkkunen, responsible for tech sovereignty, gave the green light for a new era of digital youth protection. The core of the offensive is a Europe-wide app for age verification, already tested by several countries, which, according to von der Leyen, is now technically ready and will be available to citizens shortly.

The Commission is thus reacting to concerns about risks such as online bullying, addiction factors due to algorithmic design, and cyber-grooming, which involves approaching children and adolescents online. The Commission President's diagnosis is grim: one in six children is bullied online. Furthermore, social media promotes addiction through endless scrolling, which can impair brain development.

Since platforms have so far been unable to provide effective mechanisms to protect minors from harmful content, the EU is taking matters into its own hands. The new app is intended to enable users to prove their age to online services without revealing their entire digital identity.

Data Protection to the Highest Standard

Technically, the project is based on the digital Covid certificate. As with the pandemic companion, the Commission relies on a model that works on smartphones, tablets, and computers. After downloading, the app is set up once with an identification document. Special attention is paid to privacy. Von der Leyen emphasized: The application meets “the world's highest data protection standards.” Age is verified without revealing further personal information. The app is “completely anonymous – users cannot be traced.”

The application is based on Zero-Knowledge Proof. This cryptographic principle makes it possible to prove the correctness of information – in this case, reaching a certain age – without revealing the underlying data itself. This is intended to preserve informational self-determination. Platforms only receive confirmation of being “old enough” without having to scan the ID. Austria's age control already relies on this procedure.

Enforcement of the DSA and EU Shoulder-to-Shoulder

The initiative is closely linked to the enforcement of the Digital Services Act (DSA). Virkkunen made it clear that the Commission is already taking action against companies like TikTok, Facebook, or Instagram for addictive designs. Measures have also been initiated against pornographic platforms, as they often do not use functional age controls. The new application now removes the excuse for corporations that there is no simple technical solution.

Countries like France, Italy, and Ireland are considered pioneers and plan to integrate the app into their national digital wallets. To avoid patchwork, Virkkunen intends to establish an EU-wide coordination mechanism for the accreditation of national solutions this month. The source code of the app is openly accessible as part of the EUDI digital citizen identity to build trust and facilitate integration into company solutions, for example. In Germany, an expert panel will initially develop recommendations for child safety online.
