Labour coming second was the worst of all possible outcomes.
If they had won fewer seats than the Lib Dems and come third, they would have seen the writing's on the wall and there would be more incentive to propose another voting system while they still have some power.
By coming second, the only takeaway will be that if they try harder then they can come first.
The Labour party has some good people in it, but New Labour is characterised by greedy, power-hungry conmen. No-one in charge would ever dream of putting the long-term good of the country above even the slimmest chance of winning everything.
