Anything besides addressing the real problem

Really could have done without that snark. Ski resorts aren't carbon neutral, sure, but they're also not anywhere close to a primary contributor of climate change. So I don't see why the snarky comment is warranted when they're literally doing something that will help them lower their emissions which is ... addressing the real problem.

Snow farming is one of many sustainability measures ski resorts can take. The article didn't go into detail if they're taking any other measures, but to put them on blast for even taking just one step in the right direction is a bit disingenuous.

Fair criticism, I'll own it. Apologies for being snarky. It's frustrating to see how bad things are with the climate and see little done about it. I agree, do what can be done within the systems we're given. Peace.

Trust me, I get it. I just get more frustrated when someone takes a small step in the right direction and then people chastise them for not taking a huge step. Like, you gotta start somewhere. Feels counterproductive to do that, but it's so common on Lemmy for people to let perfect be the enemy of good that I figured I'd say something.

Several of the points in that PDF are also about conservation and protecting the forest and wildlife, which I was going to mention as well. Nearly all of the ski hills around me also maintain a fair amount of forest in a sort of conservation area, but also used for cross-country skiing. So you get a ski hill, x-country trails, and many many acres of fairly protected forest.

The resort also uses those trails (and hills in some places) in the summer for hiking/biking so they still have some revenue year-round.

I've only been to a ski resort 3 times, and two of them were in the off-season lol. They're popular for conferences and such and yeah, hiking/biking/ziplining are usual attractions in the summer. The one time I went during ski season, I lodged the whole time and regret nothing.

We've still got over a meter of snow on the ground here. They're welcome to come and get it.

They should just inject billions of dollars into making the Cheese Rolling Festival an international sport, and we can convert all the ski slopes. Plus people get food, which will promptly be in short supply, and of course some people will die, which thins the herd. The maimed can be used to promote the #1 healthcare system in the world!

This is Super-Villian levels of crazy. It doesn't matter if it's been a "thing" or not. It just ain't right.

Last time I tried farming snow, the DEA made a surprise no-knock early morning visit and ruined everything. Bunch of buzzkills.

This is sad and pathetic and horrifying.

Having tried to save snowballs in the freezer for a mid-summer snowball fight, I can assure you that that’s just going to be ice and result in head trauma.

Yeah, it’s pretty dense firn, but not quite “ice.”

It’s basically only good for grinding up and getting a base started. It’ll level out surfaces, cover rocks, etc.

It’s onto meant to shorten the time until opening day. The first snows firn are skiable sooner than the first snows on bare mountain.
