The prosecution claimed Mr Mullins' injuries were caused by "dragging and crushing" rather than the impact of the crash itself.

    Fuck.

That's more common than most would care to know. Unless you're bouncing your skull off windshields/roads with no helmet (or rolling your torso into paste under), collisions are usually not immediately fatal.

    From the govt website:

If you’re found guilty of murder, a court must give you a life sentence. A court may decide to give a life sentence for other serious offences like rape or armed robbery.

If you’re given a life sentence it will last for the rest of your life.

If you’re ever released from prison you will spend the rest of your life ‘on licence’ in the community.

If you break licence conditions or commit another crime you can be sent back to prison.

If this were in the US, it would have been called a "pedestrian involved accident" and the driver might have gotten a ticket. Maybe.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-61890557 This state attorney general got "misdemeanor traffic" charges after drunkenly hitting and killing a man. He claims it was a deer but the guy's glasses were in his car after the hit!

    state attorney general

I'm sure that has nothing to do with his job title and every Barista would get the same leniency....

It's no secret that those involved in law here often feel they're above it, and in fairness since enough of their coworkers feel the same I guess they technically (or effectively, may be the right word) are. Not that they should be.
