In academic discourse, use of the correct name is an important means of establishing professional credibility. For example, if within the fields of computer science and information science, a specific term of art, such as artificial intelligence, has gained widespread acceptance, the use of an alternative term—a term, like superintelligence, not widely accepted within the discipline—would seriously undermine the credibility of academic work (and the author’s more general standing within the field).

Donald Trump has notoriously attempted to rechristen the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America.” So too has he attempted to rename Lake Ontario to “Lake America,” and he is threatening to fashion new MAGA names for an ocean, a major river, and the state of New Mexico. Trump also recently signed an executive order requiring all federal government programs and communications to use the terms superintelligence and S.I. rather than the broadly accepted nomenclature artificial intelligence and A.I. One might shrug all of this off and say, “Well, so what? It’s a free country, and all of us can still use the generally accepted names of places (Gulf of Mexico) and things (A.I.).”

Unfortunately, after Oct. 1, 2026, this is no longer the case for academics at state-sponsored colleges and universities in Alabama. H.B. 2 officially bans the use of the phrase Gulf of Mexico by any and all state employees. As a professor at the University of Alabama School of Law, I find this appalling.

Yah in a deep red state, there are a few. The positive sign is that in 2024 there were trump stores everywhere selling that cheap Chinese merchandise crap…they are no where to be found now.

I live in the Denver area, so I guess I'm lucky. I have not seen anyone wearing that gear in quite some time. Even early on in 2016-2017, only rarely seen even then. I few people flying flags at their houses, even now. But no shirts/hats. Probably not brave enough, honestly.

Maybe a handful of locals were wearing the gear out in the early days. But even his supporters seem to realize that others view it like wearing a Klan robe in public...

I remember seeing some kid around 2018 or 2019 wearing one of those stupid hats. He was an Asian teen/early 20's. Not sure if he was confused, wearing it ironically, or what. I did notice he was getting open stares.

Man that must be nice lol. I’m in the lower Alabama area and holy shit, these morons sport it like a badge of honor. For a while we had lots of boats flying the flags, hell they even had a pro trump flotilla/parade, several boats sunk in it which I thought was ironic. Lot less of it now a days though…but the people in this area care more about what letter is next to a persons name vs supporting someone that will actually help. My local watering hole tolerates those folks but luckily no one likes them.

I love Colorado. Very little of this, at least on the Front Range.

Although even when we travel, we don't really see them? But maybe we are mostly in metro areas? I thought for sure when we went to the Keys this year I'd see some. We also drove up to Montana and I figured I'd see some, but no.

We also went to Texas and Arizona and Utah on various trips since 2020. Could be most of those trips were when donnie was out of office, though.

I have seen a few fuckfaces with "Let's Go Brandon" dumbassery plastered on their shirts, but that was it.
