Anti-LGBTQ+ Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) followed in the president’s footsteps on Monday when he used an anti-trans slur to describe cisgender Democratic South Carolina Senate candidate Annie Andrews.

Scott said during an appearance on Real America’s Voice, “Annie Andrews, as President Donald Trump calls her, tr***y Annie, here’s a person who believes, as a pediatrician, for trans surgery, gender surgery for trans kids. That’s wrong. Period,” Scott said.

Is that word like the N word, where people who aren't it can't use it? After hearing about https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trannyshack I used that word in a conversation and my gay friend got really offended, and I was confused and never figured out why.

Edit: I want to clarify that this is an honest question, I'm not trolling. I just want to know what usage is acceptable and what is not.

I think it's more akin to the f word for gay people. Don't think it's appropriate to ever use it

It seems like that's the right way to think about it. But I'm still confused about why there was there a famous trans club with it right in the name.

In January 2015, Trannyshack was renamed "Mother" and started taking place at Oasis, a San Francisco gay club owned by Heklina. The reason for the name change was out of respect for the transgender community, who were critical of the use of the word "tranny" as being offensive.

I think there's a generational difference on what words are or are not slurs. Like, at one point I ended up in a conversation with a friend's very chill but 70+ year old parents and they couldn't believe I used the word "queer" to describe somebody because that was a slur to them, but they also thought calling that person "fruity" was totally OK, which definitely made me feel uncomfortable.
