What we need is an AI cooling off period, say 50000 years, during that time all AI companies are required to scale back their operations to that they had back in 2022. Any hardware and datacenter bought after that will be sold to the general public at charity auctions.
Then perhaps we can stop throwing compute at the problem and actually innovate to make the crap more efficient and optimized while we maintain the ability of the common man to learn computing and keep the skills alive.
I am so fucking done with AI, but I understand that we need to keep researching it, what I don't understand is the accepted attitude that everything needs to pivot to AI.
At work we have started working with a new AI company promising to make everyone able to make any application for anything without knowing how to code.
And, sure it does look cool, and it isn't based in the US (though that is probably just a matter of time), but we are making us dependent on them for everything.
I have a few questions that I wiuld love to ask, but I don't know if I'll get the chance...
- Where is the actual data stored? Is it stored in the AI company's infrastructure? How do we export it? What happens if the AI company is bought by another company in another country, will our data move to the new country's jurisdiction?
- What does it cost to keep an app running? Once the app is no longer developed, what does it cost to keep running?
- What is our strategy to move away from the AI company when they suddenly raise costs both for AI tokens, and for just running the app?
- What is our strategy to maintain in-house knowledge of the actual processes? Without that knowledge, how do we evaluate the apps that are generated by the AI company?
I suspect the answer will be something like:
- Don't worry about it.
- Don't worry about it.
- Don't worry about it.
- Don't worry about it.
