I think this is one of the most comprehensive critiques of Reddit on the net.

Lots of good points here, but I’m not sure I fully agree with authors part 3. I think (well thought I guess) of Reddit as less like a well stocked, library which I feel the author is trying to suggest Reddit is like, but instead more like a pub. It’s an online 3rd space and sometimes you get an intellectual conversation, sometimes you get memes, and there’s lots of groupthink and loud voices. But it gets you through the day.

Overall though, the author i think is right. And Reddit really did turn quite a bit from the early days (I can’t remember when I joines but think it was around 2009.) The system rewarded more and more quick meme comments, but that’s every online community I’ve seen (slashdot. Fark). I don’t know how you avoid that and it really has me thinking about how you might make a good public space online; like what Reddit felt like at one point.

There's a piracy site with a forum I frequent that I feel is a good public space. Sometimes people put pirated games up there, sometimes the devs themselves post there to market their game. Either way, there's a bunch of good talk on what's good and what's crap. Lots of tags to find what you're looking for too.

    The Illusion of Intellectualism

Reddit gives users a sense of being informed and thoughtful without requiring actual depth. Reading top comments often replaces reading the linked content itself. This allows users to feel as if they’re engaging in smart discourse, without doing the work.

True, especially with r/philippines, the country subreddit I once hung around. Just noticed that the majority of the userbase in the sub tend to see themselves smugly as more "smarter" Filipinos than Filipinos on Facebook, a platform they see as largely full of "ignorant degenerates"; it wasn't unusual seeing almost everyday complaint posts about the country and of the lower classes, and it got worse after a man named Duterte was voted into power.
