Chinese Police had increased pressure on the festival through repeated phone calls in recent weeks, it is understood.

The Chinese authorities have grown increasingly intolerant of open discussion of feminist or LGBTQ+ issues. Film festivals in particular attract particular scrutiny because they provide an opportunity to platform narratives that sit outside the Communist party’s worldview.

Beijing Independent film festival, China’s most prominent independent film festival, was closed down in 2014 after the authorities detained the founders and shut off the electricity supply to the venue. Last year, an independent Chinese film festival that was due to be held in New York was cancelled after harassment from the Chinese authorities, an incident which raised concern about transnational repression.

Hongwei Bao, a professor of Chinese studies at the University of St Andrews who focuses on LGBT issues, said that the festival was “a beacon for LGBT resilience” in China.

“The shutdown of the Love Queer Cinema Week has a chilling affect on the Chinese queer community,” Bao said.

In June this year, screenings of films with LGBTQ+ themes that were scheduled to be held in Beijing during Pride month at the Institut Français, a French cultural centre, were cancelled because of police harassment.

Despite the increased pressure, Beijing Queer film festival remains a popular event. Several international film-makers whose work had been selected for the festival had travelled to China to participate. Last year, the festival received 200 volunteer applications, four times the number received in 2024.

I mean I post on both those fairly regularly and am a lot closer to that political ideology than I am to a server like .world. I don't really see how it's hypocritical?

I don't think there are actually many people who would claim that China is a perfect society in every perceivable way. I think most just tend to compare the same issue with prominent Western countries, and in contrast...... It's hard to argue with a lot of the times.

You must not read comments too much if you've totally missed all the posts discussing trans rights, or lack thereof, in the U.S. while being painfully silent on posts like this.

I mean shit, just a few weeks ago I was literally met with whataboutism on a post about a woman being executed for blasphemy in Iran.

But what about the live execution?

    Says the .mler.

I don't have the patience to go through each and every individual instance of hypocrisy coming out of .ml or hexbear. Feel free to continue posting there.

In my experience most people on hex don't post on .world?

Plus.... I am actively discussing this as someone who shares a lot of the same sentiment. You aren't bringing anything to the current discussion, you're just attacking a straw man.

I was literally met with whataboutism on a post about a woman being executed for blasphemy in Iran.

And? You're currently their logical fallacy to justify your own logical fallacy.

don't have the patience to go through each and every individual instance of hypocrisy coming out of .ml or hexbear.

I didn't ask you too? I was giving you an opportunity to have a conversation about the topic you claimed no one would dare talk about out of fear of hypocrisy......you chose to complain about it instead?

Yeah this level of willfull ignorance is about what I'd expect from someone who frequents .ml and hexbear communities.

I have addressed the topic, you've tried to move the goalposts and I haven't let you.

Feel free to continue to flail.

Your original statement was that ml or hex wouldn't address the topic because it would be hypocritical. I am someone who frequents those subs, I am addressing the topic. How am I being hypothetical?

You listed anecdotal statements you claim others have made that you claim make them hypocritical, but you haven't addressed this topic or my response. You continue to just argue with strawmen instead of the person in front of you.

Here's the rhetorical technique used to move the goalposts:

A comment predicting general avoidance of a certain cognitive dissonance in a community.

A reply then states, here I am, talking about it, thus you are wrong.

The trick is a categorical blurring by shifting the discussion about general behaviour of a group to that of one individual who implies that they are a sufficient representative of that community to settle the argument.

C'mon, they were talking about the tenor of conversation in an echo chamber. Pay attention.

  • comment predicting general avoidance of a certain cognitive dissonance in a community.

    Aka making an unsupported assumption.

reply then states, here I am, talking about it, thus you are wrong.

The important distinction is that I am willing to address the validity of accusation of hypocrisy from my own perspective. I didn't just state here I am therefore you are wrong. I already made a general statement on this thread, and invited a person to explain their reasoning.

trick is a categorical blurring by shifting the discussion about general behaviour of a group

The perceived behaviour of a group described by an echo chamber*

sufficient representative of that community to settle the argument.

I can only give my perspective and the anecdotal accounts of what I have witnessed while engaging with the group. Just as they can only give their perspective and anecdotal accounts of their interactions. The difference is that I am willing to discuss my perspective while they have only relied on anecdotes.

tenor of conversation in an echo chamber

Can't tell if you are being self aware and acknowledging your participation in an echo chamber or making an accusation......

Yes this is exactly why I stated I don't have the patience to discuss this with you. Your type loves to suggest that in order to prove my point I need to supply an essays worth of cited instances of hypocrisy across a multitude of posts. I don't care nearly enough about proving myself right as you do proving me wrong, especially considering you don't read posts with .ml or hexbear user interaction in the first place.

You'll bend over backwards defending these hypocrites after proving you've done nothing to actually inform yourself on their actions within many different threads. Somehow you've convinced yourself this is an echo chamber, despite hexbear being the definitive echo chamber spawned from /r/chapostraphouse rejects. Not only that, they've been defederated by how many different sites at this point?

Inb4 more willfull ignorance proving that this is, indeed, a waste of my time.

Lol, you could have just explained your reasoning behind why you think it would be hypocritical in the time you took to write that. You are making a lot of assumptions and excuses to avoid the topic you brought up in the first place.

Oh yes I'm sure there's nothing to talk about, that's why your responses have been getting longer and longer.

With the exception of this one.

Oh yes, the 'socialist' china, where you disappear if you make an independent workers union. Or get surveilled if you are a Marxist trying to bring up inhumane working conditions.

The freedom in this corpocratic regime just overflows any imaginable roof. The west sucks so bad, I can write about it and I wont get fucked for it.

Yes i think china should dissolve together with United States of Nvidia. Because both are corpocratic regimes killing people and having imperislist ambitions.

None of that is true in the slightest. Go back to Reddit with that propaganda
