The lack of (financial) #sustainability of #opensource initiatives when some projects are famously holding the entire digital system on their shoulders is not a freak of human nature: The formal quid-pro-quo economy, built on top of monetary systems and legal contracts is 1) a flailing work-in-progress and 2) is not a pattern that fits everything important. Egregiously, the most vital of all human activities, namely parents (mothers) raising kids, is effectively outside the economic game.

The strange economic role of software (economists call it fancy names like non-rivalrus, zero marginal reproduction costs etc.) and in particular the radical nature of open source software is not really internalized. This has some bizarre implications. Case in point: coding "AI" that is supposed to be a real "business model", one which is worth "trillions". It would literally not have been possible without all the open source repositories and most likely will end up being open source itself.
