    I agree, but people are still voting for them. They're squeaking through, but still getting the votes. That is, if they're not cheating.

    IIf you have a megaphone that lets you repeat your propaganda 100 times a day (and, thanks to modern data analysis, even tailor it to each individual recipient), it won't be hard for you to steer public opinion in the direction you want (and based on your lies).
