It was waaaaay cheaper to buy a... mmmm... lesser quality movie on a Betamax cassete than renting one and have to pay late fees, or rewind fees. Ah, and in case a "new" release came, you could just ask your provider to get it next week.

You could also bring back your cassette, and get another movie for cheaper.
