One issue is that there isn't much content outside a specific topic (open source and American politics). The biggest reason why people use social media is to socialise, and not to show off how much of an open source advocate they are. To people who aren't interested in that, this site is pretty much a downgrade. Defederation hurts content discoverability. Instances potentially shutting down is a risk.
