Why wouldn't they be visible?

Vertical tabs let you see way more tab titles than horizontal tabs that start reducing the width when horizontal space runs out.

Main reason I use vertical tabs.

Yes I think i was thinking of the compact view of the vertical tab bars. Then I would say it's just the aesthetics for me. As a left to right reader, it feels the tab titles habe a lots prominent presence than the main content. It's a matter of getting used to then.

Then put the tabs on the right? ;-)

The core thing that makes horizontal tabs not very useful to me is that having the top of the vertical tabs area used for bookmarks is superior to anything that can be done with horizontal tabs.

I am actually trying vertical tabs after reading this and it is surprisingly disorienting for me. I think the major reason for me is that if I need to check the URL I need to read the top but if I want to read the tab title, I have to look left. Using split windows is also common for me, where the proportions are inversed. I think I'll go back to horizontal tabs soon
