I've had one longhair my entire life and he wasn't too bad; he needed weekly brushing, more during the shedding seasons, and he'd get matts under his armpits and around the base of his tail. He was pretty good about it though. Otherwise I've had shorthairs; I brush my current cat mostly as an anti-hairball exercise.
