Can we please just have one refuge from US politics? Seriously.

Sure. Go make one. Until then, this is what's happening in the world and it's affecting damn near everyone on earth in one capacity or another as the world order is being upended.

Don't like it? Do something about it. Don't bitch to random people about it.

I have really bad news for you. American politics and the resulting violence is what's on TV. Everyone is watching because it's affecting many, many people, and very much not only in the US. And exactly what in the fuck would make you think that a Wikipedia community , of all places, would be that?

Since there's no sanctuary from incessant US politics it would at least be nice if this place could be a refuge from aggressive swearing.

You should get off the internet. You aren't made for it.

No, in fact the problem is that you are confused about where you are. This is not !microblogmemes@lemmy.world or !politics@lemmy.world !news@lemmy.world where you seem to mostly hang out (and presumably shout and insult people). This is a sedate forum to discuss Wikipedia articles, which clearly you have no interest in doing.

Sidebar should say something about THREE ragebaity posts in 24 hours on US politics, a subject which is already covered interminably elsewhere.

PS: a relevant meta discussion from last week. If people here are trying to ensure the fediverse stays an unpopular, angry, politics-obsessed place, they're on the right track.

While I agree that some communities should limit political posts, Wikipedia has been invaluable with keeping up with what's going on in recent years.

So much happens every day and much of it falls off the news cycle before I find out what ended up happening. The Wikipedia compilation/ series articles are excellent resources for staying informed.

Bub, I scroll All arranged Hot. I don't hang out anywhere. I take the feed as it happens and comment when I fucking feel like it and say whatever the fuck I want to. You and a few other fucking crybabies have been bitching lately about not liking what you see. Block and move on. It's easy. But, a Wiki article was posted to the Wikipedia discussion community. That's what happens in this community and you come blubbering " oh is there no refuge from US politics", sure there is. There's comics communities, LGBTQ communities, neurodivergence communities, art communities, cat picture communities. Don't be fucking lazy. If you don't like a post, even though it fits the community it was posted to, and how you decide to handle that is to complain, someone is going to tell you to shut the fuck up. I am taking that opportunity right now. Shut the fuck up.

This kind of comment (which I skim-read) is exactly why social media has such a bad name.

You're someone who enjoys swearing and insulting people and probably doesn't care if you get insulted in return. Do you really imagine that most people in society are like that?

Without moderation, every community inevitably ends up as an echo chamber inhabited by people like you. The others have all fled. For the community dedicated to Wikipedia, I hoped for better.

I would advise if you're feeling overwhelmed to use some of the plentiful filter tools built into Lemmy and its associated apps. This is a major benefit of the fediverse in general. But in these times we have a duty to allow folks to have a voice. -the mods

Yes, yes, I understand your arguments. But I also think you know what's going on here. This platform hosts a lot of users who happen to be US progressives, they're angry and frustrated about the news and looking for somewhere to vent. The myriad more appropriate communities they frequent are already overflowing, so they come here too. 3 posts about this one US-specific news story in a place intended for discussion of Wikipedia articles! You know that's too many. I am not the only one frustrated with this problem - see the discussion I linked to up-thread.

Sure, the fediverse grants tools to deal with the issue. But is that a recipe for the fediverse's success, really? "Sure, it's a hellhole but once you've spent 3 months blocking and filtering everyone and everything, it's great." Surely it would be simpler if moderators just tried to get up the courage to moderate.

Sorry, it's not going to happen. Moderation does not mean 'happy happy joy joy, insulate you from the world around you'. I don't think three articles about the leading topic in global news is too many. The majority of our users agree (we've had no complaints other than yours and those articles are also the most upvoted). I suggest that you found your own community: 'Wikipedia_nopolitics'. We have had multiple people split off and make their own wikipedia communities when they've had different objections and we welcome it; another benefit of the fediverse. Best of luck to you.

You're missing my basic point. I think your utopia of everyone having their own filter bubble is actually a dystopia. And I'm not complaining about "politics", I'm complaining about 3 articles on a single incident of US politics in one day. If America is the world then maybe you should rename this community "Wikipedia_US". Sure, "nobody" but me is complaining but you can see that a few agree with me and there are a good few others in !fediverse@lemmy.world.

Surely it would be simpler if moderators just tried to get up the courage to moderate.

    Explain.

You have the entirety of the rules at your disposal. What rule has anyone broken, that I have personally neglected out of cowardice.

See my replies to the other mod.

It's true that no rule has been broken, but moderators have the discretion to reject submissions that add nothing to a community. Again: 3 posts on this single incident in one day, in this community - which is not dedicated to the USA or to politics let alone to both - is too much. I refuse to believe you can't see that. So... courage.

    I've made my point.

You've made a point, but I'm not sure you're making the right point in the right community.

In the past day, eighteen posts were made.

The three objectionable ones, which I'm assuming were The Killing of Alex Pretti, the List of Shootings by US Immigration agents in the second Trump presidency, and Abolish ICE, are three separate but related topics directly targeting insane abuses of power brought around by the current regime.

    3/18= 17%

Add in a few other US leaning and political posts (including the Little Eichmanns post that I'm offended that you're not including in your screed), and it's a quarter of the posts, from a bad day for America.

The other wiki communities share the message as well- !wikipedia@lemmy.ml and !wikipedia@sh.itjust.works are also hosting the same top three Objectionable Topics, which might add to your sense of overwhelm.

I won't pull down valid submissions for the same reason I don't give you a 24 hour ban when you get trolly and obstinate in the comments. I want people to see, and make up their own minds.
