It's meat and cheese surrounded by bread so I'd think maybe, but I'd love to hear some opinions!

In Spanish the word for sandwich also starts with 'empa' so I think they must be

Empanada is "in bread". Em like entomb + pan.

Emparedado is "in walls". Em like envelope + pared.

depends on the region...

My first time in Montevideo had me cringing at going from "quiero este ~~empanada~~ emparedado" to "este sanguiche"

FYI I had a brainfart, putting empanada instead of emparedado.
