Both fediverse softwares that support user reviews for books, both have RSS support natively (no Piefed/Misskey bridge needed), and some comments also seem discontent with Amazon's mismanagement overall.

Suggestion: if you consider converting your threadiverse feeds to Mastodon hashtag feeds, don't.

#rss #rssfeeds

A continuation of the Mbin situation, after that post, I noticed even after fixing the links, posts wouldn't appear.

Turns out my main instance is in private mode because of scrappers, and my backup plan uses Cloudflare which apparently doesn't like me connecting to Newsboat.

While I could use another alt I have, now also for RSS and then just set the redirect script for its posts too, I was in a hurry so I just made a copy of each link and converted them to Mastodon links, since threadiverse communities auto-attach their handles as hashtags.

But by doing that, 4 problems arise.

First, a hashtag may be used for different contexts, like !news@indie-ver.se and !news@lemmy.world covering pretty different topics, but their resulting hashtag feed, e.g. https://mastodon.social/tags/news.rss, encompassing their posts plus whatever else from wherever else.

Second, mass conversion can cause duplicated feeds, and handling of that in feed readers is rare from my experience.

Third, some people abuse the amount of hashtags, a.k.a. spam, specially on the microblog side of things.

Fourth, the consequence of all 3 above, posts are fetched en masse. In my case for example, what stays around 600~1200 posts a day (still a lot, I know; working on that), went to around 5000.

Nope. Not for me. 🙅‍♂

At worse, if someone wants to make an exercise on patience and do it, at least make a backup soon before adding the hashtag feeds.

Hope this helps someone.

The problem: you want to follow your favorite actor’s or director’s new movie or tv series releases, but don’t want to get anything else.

If you try to solve it with some website’s newsletter, you’d 10 out of 10 get unwanted ads or offers. If such a newsletter exists, that is. Then it should be free.

Simply get an RSS feed from my website called Magnanium, free from ads and data collection. I am using this and plan to use it for years to come. Which means that it’s gonna remain working and free, as long as possible.

It’s obvisouly not the most exciting side project, but it solves one fore-mentioned problem that i wanted to solve. I don’t use social media other than reddit, which means that, to follow my fav artist’s new works i had to either 1) check their imdb regularly, or 2) read all the posts from r/movies(or their own subreddit). These manual works is way labor-intensive than simply getting a simple RSS feed.

The website is called Magnanium. You can choose options like person’s role(actor, director, etc), release type(theatrical, home, earliest) to get the feeds for. You can choose Movie or tv releases(or both), and when to get the feed(immediately when the release date is announced or a week or month before the release).

You can see the interactive rss feed preview in the home page to see how the feed’ll look like. It may look different than what you get on your RSS reader.

Source: https://github.com/dawit909/magnanium

You can self-host this from source using your own API key for TMDB.

Mbin users beware: its feeds changed slightly on the 8th, making the old feeds unreachable

#rssfeeds #rss #mbin

Yes, it took me nearly 3 weeks to notice. Oops. "<.<

But alas, was catching up with my feeds so started sorting the backlog when I noticed any magazines (communities on Lemmy/PieFed) had their last updates on the 8th of October.

Picking a feed at random, I noticed the "/rss" in the link had changed to "/feed", such as:

  • https://thebrainbin.org/rss?magazine=anime_art@ani.social&content=combined (the old one)
  • https://thebrainbin.org/feed?magazine=anime_art@ani.social&content=combined (the new one)

If changing the feed, depending on the reader, old posts may become unreachable, so be sure to check your backlog (if you have one) before fixing the links!

A post about using AI for RSS reader summeries caught my attention this morning.. (Linked)..Basically the OP was concerned about giving personal data to AI companies.. My responses - Here's a developer’s perspective. When I started building Muuted ( an rss reader), I wanted it to be as private as possible. I legit struggled with whether or not to add APIs for the summary feature, and I have gone back and forth on it. I landed on a compromise that might set your mind at ease about using LLM cloud APIs.

At first Muuted's summaries ran on a hosted endpoint i was gettign fo free from my Github pro sub serving a small OpenAI model. It worked, but as you pointed out, it went to OpenAI servers, and I read through their privacy policies and I wasn't comfortable with it. I'm a privacy nut so it bugged me. So I moved the whole thing onto a locally hosted 4070Ti. It worked and i used it for about three months, but one issue.. I had to build in redundancy if my local server went down. So my only options at the time were to spend a fortune a hosted GPU or be backed up by a hosted model only if my local server became unreachable . I settled on the latter (first that same OpenAI endpoint, then Groq after the free one shut down). If people are paying for a feature I have to be able to deliver it. So we're right back to square one.

As far as quality.. The local model was ok but not great. The app was also growing and taxing my 4070 so I tried a few larger models. The GPU could not handle them alongside everything else I had going on, so I had to drop summaries back to the smaller model and the results went back to mediocre. I sat with that for a few weeks but it was really annoying me.. so I did some research and landed on Anthropic. Here's why.. Anthropic's commercial terms say they do not train on API traffic, and on top of that, I built the code so nothing about the reader goes with the request: no account, no email, no reading history. Each story is summarized once and cached for everyone on Muuted to share. I ran a week long side-by-side comparison with Anthropic's Haiku. It wasn't even close and I made the decision to flip it.. keep Haiku live and use my own local model as the fallback. And like I said.. I am a privacy nut and I was comfortable with it.

So I guess what I'm getting at here is privacy can be built into almost anything. The dev just has to want that. You're likely not going to find that with anything that is ads based, so I would def lean towards subscription based apps or freeware, and make sure you read their privacy policies, because they should spell out if your data is being exposed to third parties.

If your bar is "nothing leaves my machine".. it can be done, but like you already pointed out, it will be expensive (needs a beefy GPU) and time consuming. Hope this helps set your mind at ease about LLM summeries in some way..

So reddit is turning RSS off on Nov 13..

If you follow subs in a reader: most big subs have a lemmy community with the same name, and every lemmy community has its own public feed, no account needed. The format is https://lemmy.world/feeds/c/selfhosted.xml?sort=New (swap in the community name, and the server after the @ if it isn't lemmy.world).

I built a small finder so you don't have to hunt them one by one: type a sub, it shows the matching lemmy communities, subscriber counts, whether they're actually active, and the feed link to paste into your reader. Free, no account: https://muuted.com/reddit-rss-ending/ . If a sub has no lemmy version it says so instead of guessing.

GBAtemp's new News section got a feed from the get-go!

#GBAtemp #rss #rssfeeds

Earlier today, they made a post announcing the change, and why they did it (tl;dr: previous News section wasn't well SEO for Google because it was built on top of their forum software).

Checking the new page, under the page title, one of the very first buttons that may be spotted is the RSS feed button, even before the Telegram one and the one related to the reason of the change, as shown in the attached image.

Happy to see they still care. =)

Forgejo v17 just shipped with RSS/Atom support for issue and pull request discussions. This should make it easier to follow discussions since it doesn’t require an account for each instance.

From The Verge: "Reddit will stop supporting RSS feeds on November 13th"

#Reddit claims that "RSS is 'now a common surface for large-scale scraping and automated abuse'."

Sauce: https://www.theverge.com/tech/1002788/old-reddit-ai-scraping

Maybe some frontend will add #RSSfeeds now, if there isn't any already?

Still, sounds to me like either, or both, a scapegoat and an engineered problem they now harvest the exact fruits they wanted from.

Politiet.no appears to have removed their feed about 5 months ago

#rssfeeds

The RSS Parrot bot (@api.politiet.no.politiloggen.v1.rss@rss-parrot.net) hasn't had any updates since then, their site now gives only their Google Play & ITunes as options, and the direct feed link, https://api.politiet.no/politiloggen/v1/rss, errors out with a "secure connection failed" message.

A shame tbf. It was a nice source of training reading for the language. And I can't help but wonder how much their apps monitor the user.

The OP gives an example of a working feed, https://news.google.com/rss/search?q=devops, but notes that Google rewrites all the URLs for tracking. And while from my experience people are aware of that, I think it's worth also noting: Though a tool is still a tool, Google has a history of enshittification, EEE and shadownbans, so if using their news site's RSS, it may be a good idea to proceed with caution and to have alternatives set for redundancy.

Pixiv Atom feed through the PixivFE frontend

Had mostly dropped #Pixiv given it not having a good UX, but learned recently of a frontend for it, PixivFE, which also has #Atom compatibility! This should help a lot, with being able to go straight to the posts, there being an overlap of artists between Pixiv and other platforms, and Nitter being in a limbo while the author can't revert Twitter's C&D.

The most direct option is to go to a specific tab and copy the link from the feed icon, but I haven't dug around what changes between each feed variant (their links change slightly for Home, Illustrations, Bookmarks, etc.).

Removing the contents after the ? of a given feed also seems to work, though also not sure what changes for it either. But if willing to try this variant, and using the pixiv.perennialte.ch instance for the example, generically you pick an user's page, https://pixiv.net/users/some_numeric_ID, and convert to https://pixiv.perennialte.ch/users/some_numeric_ID/atom.xml.

Apparently there is still a functional Nitter RSS, though no frontend and requires being whitelisted at Xcancel

#Nitter #RSS #RSSfeeds

Found through this article in Spanish.

In short, get the link for a given profile, e.g. https://x.com/NASA, replace x.com for rss.xcancel.com, and append /rss at the end, so it becomes https://rss.xcancel.com/NASA/rss. The article also notes that the domain for posts a given feed pulls need to be replaced by x.com (or, since the redirect is still active, twitter.com).

Also, when trying to add a feed for the first time, the feed will say "RSS reader not yet whitelist! Please send an email rss [AT] xcancel [DOT] com with this ID to get your RSS feed reader whitelisted", followed by the unique identifier to be appended to the email. The feed won't pull new articles while you don't do that.

Getting news of your favorite free software releasing can be a pain if said software isn't a part of your standard update mechanism. However, most software forges have means of providing feeds to mitigate that. Today, we look at Codeberg, based off of Forgejo.

And it's a rather simple affair. The repository page has an RSS button. The button is a link to the .rss of the repo, which makes it also rather easy to add to feed readers.

Let's use Forgejo itself (https://codeberg.org/forgejo/forgejo) as the example for this. If you hover over the RSS feed button, you see that it points to https://codeberg.org/forgejo/forgejo.rss. Seeing as Forgejo powers Codeberg, it would be safe to assume any Forgejo-powered forges offer the same functionality.

Edit: It would be safe to assume GOGS and Gitea offer the same as well, as Forgejo is a third generation fork.

If many of you use open source software that isn't bundled in a package repo or using a corporate OS, sometimes being informed of a new release of your favorite program is a hassle. However, most software forges do have a way to access the Releases feed.

Today, we look at GitHub's Release Feed. GitHub uses the Atom feed format for its release pages and the Releases page itself generates the feed. The best way to access it is going to the Releases page for a project you follow. Copy the URL from your browser and drop it into your feedreader. Attach '.atom' to the end of the URL and save.

For example, for the mobile RSS reeder ReadYou, the URL looks like https://github.com/ReadYouApp/ReadYou/releases.atom

Now you are subscribed to the Releases Feed of your favorite software project in a central place.

Standard Ebooks is a group that is dedicated to providing an off-the-shelf experience for books in the public domain. Taking Project Gutenberg releases, they apply a strict style guide, which includes a professional looking cover, typographic choices, and other options that make it stand out from the basic work done by PG, and then put the book available on their website, free for the public to download. Their public RSS feed is a list of the latest releases they have finalized and put online.

Nintendo's RSS feeds across regions

Thanks to a comment in the Datahoarder community, I learned the UK site has a #RSS feed, so curious, I tried to dig if other regions also have.

First, the sites from #Nintendo I found that do have #RSSfeeds:

And also UK from the comment:

Also found an old article on the Wayback Machine mentioning a feed for the US site, the latest working snapshot being from 2007, but the links mentioned have since been discontinued:

None of the other regional variants seem to have feeds, though.

Also I think I'll have to create a new group in the list of feeds I know. That's more variants than Steam's. 🥲

LRG store Atom feeds

All of their https://limitedrungames.com/collections/* pages (* being a wildcard), the subsections of their catalogues, have these feeds, though only for the base links, not for when they have feeds applied, so clear these beforehand.

Appending .atom at the end, for example:

Adding to the feeds I know of next.
