Next challenge is making a stealthy one with a visible tape loop that the head encodes just before it is read by the players head, then immediately erased for the next encoding as it goes around.

This could be useful with a Spectrum...
The ultimate in mixtape technology!
Not only did we LOVE Creepy Crawlers, so did my mom. On a rainy day, stuck indoors, she'd break out the Creepy Crawlers, and we'd spend hours quietly working around the hot Thingmaker, waiting our turns. Every mother's dream.
She loved Creepy Crawlers so much, that she would let us buy large sized bottles of goop, even though she automatically said No to everything else. My favorite color was Glow-in-the-Dark.
AI video.
Disappointing.
Maybe be a bit of both, but definitely they are required to operate the payphone network:
I thkught it was more that they sell money from advertising on the side, but nobody uses them, so instead of having them forcibly removed, they pivoted and claimed it was a public service.
Legally mandated. Telstra has to maintain the payphone network.
Telstra is required to provide the payphone network coverage. But it costs more money to physically collect the funds from the phones than its worth, so they just make them free to save the effort. They also have wifi in some of them thats free for telstra subscribers
there are a ton of easy captures to be had on Kangaroo Island.
Aww, just came back from there. For what its worth, Kangaroo island isnt that expensive, its suprisingly reasonable for a holiday location. But be aware that its a huge island, everything is a lot larger than i expected.
Ya'll still got payphones?
Honestly, Australia having free pay phone calls is almost more interesting than the game they are playing with them.
Absolutely.
It's nowhere near this level of effort, but I have a 60's wall-mount rotary phone wired to a Bluetooth=>POTS adapter. So not only do I have a retro phone in my house, but it actually works.
I support this man's mission of taking useless obsolete shit and kludging it until it technically works.
The saddest part of the video, in meme format:

Spoiler
Someone finally notices, and the smile on the guy's face is priceless.
Cool. My mom used to run a switchboard in her youth. I will have to share this image
Fucking loved creepy crawlers lmao
I actually bought it off eBay for my kids, but man the Goop is now getting pricey lol
It was one of the safer dangerous toys of the '60s. Later revisions, not so much.
And for the boys, creepy crawlers! Man those fumes are a strong memory.
Yeah, I hadn't even heard of PF keys and naively assumed that was a different term for the function keys I knew.
I worked for a company that did mainframe software (although I'm not sure if it actually was mainframe or just some sort of UNIX on the backend). A large part of my job involved using it, as obviously we used it in house too.
Anyway, that had PF keys, and if I remember correctly, it involved pressing Ctrl-F followed by the number, so it wasn't the same as actual Function keys.
It's my dream to own one of these
We never had one growing up but we did have a home PC. Like with AOL, all of the dial-up numbers were long distance so the costs to use it for any length of time would have been crazy. We basically had to wait another 2-3 years for a local dial-up company (basically 3 guys in the area bought a T1 line and a bank of modems) before there was a non-long distance number we could dial to get online.
I thought they were a cool idea, at least conceptually. In practice, no one really wanted to read web pages or email from across the room on a fuzzy CRT.
