Three pill treatment for sleeping sickness caused by the tsetse fly.

Save you a click.

It's funny, like, my mom was always terrified of getting sleeping sickness and hated it any time we slept more than eight hours because she was like, oh my god, you have sleeping sickness. It must have terrified her as a child when she heard of it, not knowing that you have to pretty much go to fucking Africa to get it.

Nice! Wish we could also see the costs, but as of now, it's clear they need to scale it up first.

If this will work, it will be huge, because there's really not enough attention to underwater litter.

I assume logistics could be a problem. In any case, burning methane is better than releasing it, as methane is a much more potent greenhouse gas.

Still, if it can be optimized further through smarter utilization, they should do it going forward.

Does it make sense to use burn methane for heating, when using hear pumps or geothermy would be more efficient and less polluting?

Producing methane from wastes is a good idea. This doesn't produce enough methane to cover all uses. I heard it's best to prioritize uses that are hardest to electrify (buses, heavy industry, ..).

Nice, would never think about such a use. We should definitely come up with more creative things to do things like this, because it heavily reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

One thing though: do they filter the gas? I assume some of it might be toxic.

Here's another example of Landfill gas recovery/use:

Columbus Ohio uses its landfill gas to power its municipal vehicles like buses, trash trucks, and snow plows. The rest of the unused recovered landfill gas is piped into the regular city gas mains where the city makes $2 million+ per year that pays for more city services. They started doing this about 13 years ago.

    And another methane recovery system:

Just last year Columbus started recovering methane from waste water a treatment treatment facility. This allows an expansion of the digester and the extra methane produced and recovered runs a 6MW onsite methane generator producing heat and electricity to run the waste water treatment facility.

Death caps are the sole reason you need an experienced forager to help you identify wild mushies. I actually have a fairly limited academic background in fungi and even I only will search out chicken of the woods, honey, chanterelle, and morels. Although I have been known to dehydrate a fly agaric on occasion too.

A particularly cool part: the whole process can be done in an arc furnace powered by nothing but electricity! This means we can use renewables for the facility operation, and even use the power surplus specifically, putting cheap extra energy to good use!

Great news, wish they gave more detail.

Also this is a 5 year old article - wonder what the state of it is today?

    Pedant Peeve:

It has already restored the vision of its first inaugural patient —

First or inaugural, they both mean the same thing so it's redundant.

Absolutely... People are depressed because they look at the world, but they cant do anything about that. All we can do is choose our daily life and our attitude towards it.

I dont want to become old and feel like I wasted my life by sitting around being depressed about things i could never even change.

Yep! Waited for a while to get here. Also, makes me feel like I'm an actual expert for once, lol

(It looks like one never gets truly good at their branch of science, since there's always a discovery at every corner)
