Jade and Ginger from the Continuwuity project talked about the Stitched Ordering algorithm at the last Matrix Conference. It is a serverside best-effort approach to render a coherent timeline for clients, and gracefully resolve gaps inside rooms.

Could you host a matrix server using only the Tor network? If so it would make it possible to have a communication tool thats not only encrypted but anonymous, I assume much would have to be changed and maybe federations wouldn't work at all but would it be theoretically possible?

Originally was thinking about doing it through Discord, but after the recent age-verification fiasco and "real money gaming" (gambling) ads, I'm looking for alternatives.

Matrix Metadata Problem: the server sees everything except your messages

People pick Matrix because of end-to-end encryption. But E2EE only protects message content — everything around it is plaintext.

The server sees:

• Your ID, IP, client type and version, device you use
• Your presence, typing status, read receipts
• Which rooms you join and when you join/leave
• Who else is in those rooms → your entire social graph
• Room names, topics, avatars (all plaintext state)
• For every message: who sent it, which room, a millisecond timestamp, type, size

And federation copies all of that to every other server whose users are in the room. Your "social footprint" isn't one copy — it's as many as there are servers.

I needed some help with my Element X app that I downloaded recently. I don't seem to be getting notifications on my chat.

I am using a push notifier — ntfy.sh, since I don't like Sunup (it uses Mozilla's push notifier)

I have subscribed to a few topics and I'm able to send and receive push notifications well. I'm even subscribed to a default topic.

I even ran troubleshooting tests and everything seems to be fine.

Please tell me if there's anything I need to do in order to get notifications. I miss out on a lot.

Anybody have any suggestions to more popular communities or spaces? Seems to be a bit hard to find something.
