Seeing a Vulkan API driver pull request this morning for introducing a new "Borealis" driver ID caught me by surprise as it was the first time I was hearing of such a driver. It turns out to be a fork of the Asahi Linux project's HoneyKrisp driver in Mesa for Apple Silicon hardware.

Borealis describes itself in today's Vulkan pull request as:

"This registers VK_DRIVER_ID_AURORA_BOREALIS (35) for Borealis, Aurora Silicon's open source Vulkan driver for Apple GPUs.

Borealis is derived from Asahi Linux's Honeykrisp and runs on M1 to M5 and the A18 Pro. It lives in our Mesa fork rather than upstream Mesa, and now reports its own driverName, so it needs its own ID to tell it apart from Honeykrisp. It reports VK_DRIVER_ID_MESA_HONEYKRISP until this is merged."

The Linux 7.4 block/storage and IO_uring updates were merged today for the ongoing merge window. With the breadth of Linux hardware support, the pull request varies from fixes to Linux's floppy driver to enabling support for NVMe storage on Apple M4 devices.

On the old hardware side, the Linux floppy disk driver continues to see bug fixes once in a while... With Linux 7.4, a few more fixes have trickled in. Denis Efremov of Oracle fixed a possible stack out of bounds issue with the floppy driver as reported by the Kernel Address Sanitizer. He also fixed a regression in the floppy driver from a code refactoring that took place all the way back in 2017. Now the flags for the floppy drive struct should be properly handled.

HPFS is the latest file-system driver for the Linux kernel facing possible removal. The High Performance File-System (HPFS) was developed by IBM and Microsoft for OS/2.

Following the BFS removal in Linux 7.4 as the old UnixWare file-system for boot partitions, HPFS is now on deck for possible removal from the mainline Linux kernel. HPFS development began nearly 40 years ago for OS/2 and hasn't really been relevant for many years.

The HPFS Linux driver has been orphaned and unmaintained for quite a while with no active users believed.

With the wonderful KDE Plasma 6.8 having shipped just more than one week ago, KDE developers are beginning to go heavy on new features for Plasma 6.9.

Most excitingly for the week, the KWin's compositor support for Wayland's Picture-In-Picture (PIP) protocol has been declared stable and enabled by default for Plasma 6.9. Web browsers and other users of the Wayland picture-in-picture support can now enjoy a nice out-of-the-box experience with Plasma 6.9:
