Heck yes! First game had amazing vibes.
I'm honestly astonished that they're still in the game. Hope the slop doesn't break their neck.
This year's Steam Next Fest really made me worried we're entering an Indiepocalypse 2.0 due to the increasing prevalence of AI. And it's a shame that Valve and GOG have done nothing to prevent this.
AI disclosures are nebulous and hard to enforce, but I'm really glad Itch has rules in place, and it'll probably be my go-to place to get indie games as a result.
Still makes the general opinion clear, and opens the door for actual moderation if required.
Ignoring this could take down a small fry in the industry like itch, a couple thousand TBs of slop has to be paid for by someone and I can't imagine their margins are massive.
The new filter will remove any game that has a generative AI disclosure from search results. Itch mandates that games containing generative AI content carry the disclosure, explaining exactly how AI was used in the game’s development.
So self-reports mostly.
@gamingonlinux how are your hashtags being displayed like this? I've never seen this before

Oh hey, didn't i just see this on a noAI list as an alternative to Luanti?? Sweet!!
@gamingonlinux Ooooooh! I hadn't seen Over the Hill before, but it is exactly the game I've been nebulously wishing for. The kiddo and I will be embarking on it shortly. Thanks for posting!
wz2100 is a great example. It still feels like nothing else in the genre.
Freeciv was a serious time sink. An open-source Total War would be something, though I can't imagine the amount of work.
Total Annihilation still feels huge when you pull back over a whole map. The Spring games kept that alive really well.
OpenRA is such a good way back into Dune 2000. Funny how well those old maps still hold up.
Yeah that is fair, I agree the community can be really impatient and toxic, it is a fucking shame.
I got into BAR for a little bit, and while I think the game itself is fantastic, I stopped because of the game's community. If you don't already know the meta, and how to effectively play a multiplayer RTS, you just get harassed out of lobbies that are titled as being for noobs. I'm just waiting for the single-player content they are supposed to be releasing on steam, so I can play that.
I love openRA for dune and I love openRTC too.
I always loved the total annihilation clone made with springrts
Basically age of empires
Panzer General with lots of campaigns and quite deep gameplay, also runs in browser and on mobile

Master of Orion fan remake
Xonotic doesn't really count, its mechanics are purposefully unique to itself but it keeps the Darkplaces engine going, you can play lots of wayyyy old quake maps and it is fun as hell.
BAR is one of the best rts games ever.
I used to spend way too much time on Freeciv.
I wish there was some kind of open-source Total War.
I’ve played both and they’re both great. BAR is extremely good, and wz2100 preserves a unique entry in the genre
Not official clones, and I haven't tried them but they look good:
