The cinders were a cool twist of worldbuilding in Shadowmoor. Sad to see that they've been replaced with Rimebound in the upcoming set due to what I assume is color balance reasons, but I want to see what new lore they come up with

Honestly, I've been out of play for a long time. But I still have fond memories of the aesthetic of MTG. I remember getting a book with a fat pack once, that was awesome, though it's been too long since I've read it to remember much. Admittedly, I don't know too terribly much about the lore outside of some Ravnica stuff, and even that's largely in part thanks to getting my hands on a PDF of Guildmaster's Guide to Ravnica. Also some scraps about Jace Beleran. I'm sure I'll be tossing up some Golgari art now and then. But anyways, last I played was Scars of Mirrodin when it was coming out (may the phyrexian scourge scour the lands!) Perhaps I should look into other books that flesh out the lore.

If you're interested in the lore of the plane, I enjoyed the Llorwyn/Shadowmoor cycle books and recommend them, but they are a bit of a mixed bag. I think the first one is the best, a great intro that segues into a classic fantasy adventure of strangers coming together with teasers of the larger plot. The second meanders a lot with a bunch of characters just wandering around in the forest and monologuing to themselves. The third must have run into time issues as it's a collection of short stories by various authors that range from bad to amazing. It's great at building out the lore of Shadowmoor (especially the cinders) and can be read on its own if you want as it's very light on connections to the rest of the books. The last book wraps up the story from the first two books pretty well, though I think some of the parts were a little under baked.

I do like to read fantasy and sci-fi, so yeah, I just might look into it. Especially the one with some Cinder lore. A cinder deck was one of my first decks, gifted to me by the friend who got me into MTG so that we could play together. I'd later buy my first cards from Zendikar during its release, but I did buy older blocks eventually, too. I do remember the book I had was an anthology book, I'm pretty sure. But all I can really remember about it is, I'm pretty sure at least, was a story about a Kithkin people who are pretty cautious and let fear rule over them.

That sounds like the Shadowmoor anthology book, there was a good Kithkin story like you remember

Looks like it. Looked it up, I recognized the cover. Found an online copy of it. The first story in it is Oad To Mistmeadow Jack, has the oppressive fog and everything in it that I remember. Should be fun to go back and read this. It's probably been 15 years or so now.
