Probably a dumb question but are these sold somewhere? I clicked the link but nothing jumped out at me.

I really want one, but apparently the Antenna range isn't that much better than a GL.inet Slate...

Can you provide a little more context on what that means? Is that really bad? Is it just bad for your usecase?

I had kinda wanted to get one of these at some point down the road as I move away from proprietary stuff in my life

I wanted to boost the weak 5Ghz signal in my apartment (thick walls) without resorting to a repeater.

I hoped that the OpenwrtOne would boost greater range if I upgraded the detacheable antennas, but after reading a bit learned that it would not make much of a differencd from the Slate that I have with wired in antennas

Haven't had any issues, you can remove the radio antennas it comes with and use anything else you want to increase range. I ended up buying dome antennas and using those which have worked well. These are hackable hardware wise to do what you want with a little effort.

Not a direct answer to your question, but if you need more ports I'd recommend getting a managed switch and using VLANs. Connect an 8-port switch to the switch to the 2.5GbE port and you've given yourself six additional ports.
