I have rarely felt ashamed of B.C. but I do today. After seeing the U.S. descend into complete murderous fascism, the greatest province in Canada watched it and said “we would like some of that.”

It's weird too. Vancouver just elected a Green party mayor + a progressive city council last week, and the socialist slate (COPE) won seats for every candidate they put forward

Today, a week later, a large part of the city picked conservatives for the provincial election.

The only thing that is consistent between the two events is that they were both replacing incumbent governments.

I'd also like to point out, since this is the world news community, while this headline is technically true, it implies a long history of the "Conservative Party of BC". This party did not exist just a few years ago (aside from a few people keeping the name alive). Most of the current well known MLAs (sitting members of that party) come from various other right / center right parties which each went through identity crises over the past few years.

What also hurt the NDP was that this election looked like an unnecessary political play, while the average person was stressed about cost of living / trump. The BC NDP had a majority already and they would have been fine for another 2 years. It was also announced only a month ago and took place only a week after the municipal elections took place province wide. But I'm sure that we'll see a lot of analysis about this over the next few weeks

Seems that familiarity DOES breed contempt in Canadian provincial elections like it does in US presidential ones 😮‍💨

    What a bunch of idiots!

Have they learned nothing from the excretable David Cameron throwing away his career in an effort to prove that the racists that made up his core constituency weren't isolationists who wanted to leave the EU? 🤦🏻

Fuck. There's going to be so much deforestation. Why do I keep coming to Lemmy? Every other post is depressing news. But I suppose I'm not the type of person to just ignore what's happening. The line between what I am and a total fucking masochist is reeaaaaally blurry these days.

Such a beautiful province; now doomed to right-wing plunder with the Americans, while they fuck the population over.

    Fuck you BC!

    Fuck you dry.

BC rednecks are just as bad as ours in Alberta, and as those in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario. The lack of brain activity knows no provincial border. History of provincial leadership is another story though, and I hope BC can recover. I wish we had our own Wab Kinew, you fortunate 'toban bastards.

I'm not familiar with Québécois or Maritime redneckery.
