Fwiw, Norway has had conscription for some 170 years.

We have had conscription in Denmark since the 1800s, so it is far from new. The news being reported here, is that they have extended it to women, and made it a longer commitment (11 months I think, used to be 4-8 months).

Conscription is the Nordic way. Train before it is needed, so that everyone knows what to do when shit hits the fan. And when it does a large part of the population knows how to enact a specific role in the army, would it be needed. From crewing submarines to driving tanks or how to use the communications equipment.

Nobody should, but what are you going to do when the US invades your country?

Conscription will end the day the concept of countries ends

I can think of arguments to the contrary.
