Today, we’re excited to announce our latest contribution to AI research with Magistral — our first reasoning model. Released in both open and enterprise versions, Magistral is designed to think things through — in ways familiar to us — while bringing expertise across professional domains, transparent reasoning that you can follow and verify, along with deep multilingual flexibility.

We’re releasing the model in two variants: Magistral Small — a 24B parameter open-source version and Magistral Medium — a more powerful, enterprise version.

They're still holding back bigger ones, unfortunately.

Yes it would have been awesome of them to release a bigger one for sure :( At the end of the day they are still a business that needs a product to sell. I don't want to be ungrateful complaining that they dont give us everything. I expect some day all these companies will eventually clam up and stop releasing models to the public all together once the dust settles and monopolies are integrated. I'm happy to be here in an era where we can look forward to open licence model released every few months.

    For sure.

But I guess it’s still kinda… interesting? Like you’d think Qwen3, Gemma 3, Falcon H1, Nemotron 49B and such would pressure them to release Medium, but I guess there are factors that help them sell it.

As stupid as this is, they’re European and specifically not Chinese. In the business world, there’s this mostly irrational fear that the Deepseek or Qwen weights by themselves will jump out of their cage and hack you, heh.
