Alabama was 49th in everything, thanks to Mississippi being 50th.
Oklahoma has been plumbing new depths of late.
However, I think Mississippi is having a moment in large part because the systems of disenfranchisement have been breaking down. And unlike with Alabama and it's large cadre of wealthy white German expat rocket scientists, the white upper class in the state has been fumbling their bag for decades.
Apartheid systems struggle when there's no economic benefit to being in the "superior" cohort. Not unlike with Texas and Georgia, where the suburbs have melted back into the urban core and people have lost sight of themselves as racialized factions.
