#86: Star Trek: The Original Series, season 3, episode 5 "Is There in Truth No Beauty?"

Written by Jean Lisette Aroeste, directed by Ralph Senensky.

Stardates 5630.7 through 5630.8 (February 2269)

"The glory of creation is in its infinite diversity." - Doctor Miranda Jones

The Enterprise is ordered to transport the Medusan Ambassador Kolios to his homeworld. Traveling with him are Doctor Miranda Jones, a human telepath that was selected to join minds with Kilios and Larry Marvick, one of the designers of the Enterprise's engines. Captain Kirk, Commander Spock, and Doctor McCoy join the two for dinner to discuss their mission and accomplishments when Jones suddenly senses the desire to murder coming from someone. When she returns to her quarters, Marvick follows her and confesses his love to her, pleading that she not go with Kolios to the Medusan homeworld. She lets him down as gently as she can, but he becomes enraged and attempts to assassinate Ambassador Kolios. Failing to do so, he retreats to Engineering where he momentarily commandeers the ship and sends it through the galactic barrier at high warp. In a void outside of the galaxy with no bearings to find their way back, Spock proposes a risky plan to mind meld with Kolios, an expert at astrological navigation, so that his being can take control of Spock's body to return the Enterprise to known space.

For some reason I only have faint memories of this one.

Well... I do seem to recall Spock forgetting to put on his protective goggles, and briefly going mad as a result. (or was that another ep?) Oh, and also the terrifying fact that they went someplace so far beyond the Milky Way that the space scenery looked downright bizarre.

I do believe TNG borrowed that scenario for one of the eps in which "The Traveller" helps mentor Wesley. Yet again you have a deranged (or plain idiotic / narcissistic) engineer who botches things badly, and manages to transport the Enterprise to another bizarre-looking place.

Spoilers for The Next GenerationWhere No One Has Gone Before

I would say that TNG did a better job with that plot point. Imagine if a Medusan was involved there, too. And Wesley had to go “mad” to get the ship back home.

I’m starting to get tired of how often the Enterprise is a stone’s throw from the galactic barrier or outside of the galaxy altogether. I’m going to have to assume they went straight up or down.
