I'm almost done with The Shadow of the Torturer by Gene Wolfe, and I have to admit, I have no clue what's going on and am totally disengaged. The beginning and middle were so much more compelling and the book takes such a strange turn when he leaves the citadel. Everything afterwards reads like some sort of dream sequence where no one's actions or behaviour make any sense.

    I read this recently and also found it kinda underwhelming. I know there's a massive kinda cult following of this series and supposedly this massive layering in the writing that makes it amazing or whatever, but for me, it was just a dull read. It was a bit of a slog for me.

    Yeah, the dream sequence vibe is why I love this series so much. It's one of those, "it's the journey, not the destination" kind of things, where you savor the prose while enjoying the ride while not thinking too much about where it's headed. At least, for Me. I get it if you're not as into it, and you're far from alone in that.
