If you compare it to their presence in the overall population, is their relative on screen presence dropping to meet it, or dropping below it?

Certainly, its a good thing to have an industry wide push to make those groups feel more accepted, but I also didnt expect it to last forever. I expect it will stabilise somewhere a bit lower than the last 10-15 years rather than trail away to nothingness. Unless we go full fascist, God forbid.

we have never been represented anywhere near proportionally in screen roles.

Looking into it and found a plausible reason we'd have different takes on it. Im british, the UK's Creative Diversity Network has specific data on this. Transgender performers accounted for 1.3% of scripted TV contributions in 2019, falling to 0.8% in 2025, compared with a population benchmark of 0.5%. So at least here, representation does appear to be declining towards population proportionality, rather than falling below it.

Whereas in the US its at about one eighth of the relative population percentage, which is fairly mad.

What a weird and dehumanized way to analyze this problem.

How else would you analyse it?

Well see there are whole bodies of academia that have been devoted to critically analyzing media and how it intersects with society, just quantifying numbers and crudely applying the benchmark doesn't really tell you the full story and if I need to point that out to you, you desperately need a more well rounded humanities education.

You can "hit the numbers" so to speak with a movie for diversity and do nothing for actual representation if you undermine and hamstring the representation of diversity and bottle it up as secondary to the story, or do the opposite and repeatedly elevate diversity as an inherently tragic narrative.

The post wasn't about the quality of the representation?

Maybe you need to take your time reading before responding shittily? You'll have much more fruitful conversations at the very least.

  • the quantity here presented as an indicator. so people can have a number to talk about because the actual thing 'kinds of stories in the zeitgeist' is really fucking hard to quantify and get scary about even when a scary thing us happening, which it is.

Experts warn this only makes it harder to combat dehumanizing myths.

    ...

Streamers and big networks are caving to the cultural creep of conservatism, Rose said, and "consider trans stories, trans actors and trans characters to be too specific, potentially too alienating, as opposed to just part of human experience."

Hmmm who does this sound like?

    Who?

Captain Cherry Picker of the HMS Selective Quote.

The article itself uses quantitative data extensively to establish its argument. I simply asked how representation compares with population demographics, which is a perfectly legitimate question. Suggesting that makes me comparable to executives rejecting trans stories as "too alienating" is a spectacular leap in logic by someone bathing in their unpleasant emotional state.

  • how is that, weighted for proportionality? lines screen time importance etc?

and then remember that we should be over represented. its fucking theater and media studies. that's gayer than a woman with a reverse shrink ray driving a uhaul with a busted suspension into her now-giant girlfriend's pussy after knowing her for 30 minutes, then adopting 20 cats.

I watched a movie recently about a trans character. That movie had 13 credited actors, one of whom was trans. Let's say 10 for easy math.
I can easily name 9 movies from the same year that didn't have any. Many had more than 10 actors. But let's assume they all had 10. That means that 1 out of these 100 actors was trans. 1%.
I don't know what the actual totals are, but I would be shocked if the numbers at their peak even crossed the threshold of the population percentage.

Last I checked it's about 1% of the population is trans, numbers are going up among youth, we're definitely underrepresented. Also personally it irritates me that most trans roles are for things specifically about trans and queer people or their entire character identity somehow becomes the fact they're trans. Would be nice to have more "this is a show that has nothing to do with queerness also one of the people is trans, doesn't come up in any big way". There have been a few but it's rare
