Very specific question. Can someone explain when , how and why the onside kick exists in American football? I see it as some kind of last ditch hope things the losing team does.

Typically after you score in football you then kick the ball to the other team to begin their possession, one of your own players can't recover the ball unless an opponent has touched it first. This means that it's very unlikely you'll recover your own kick if it's taken as normal.

Onside kicks send the ball at the opposition at high speed and bouncing uncontrollably end over end in the hope that the other team mishandles it, allowing you to recover it and retain posession.

It's still very unlikely you end up with the ball, and if you fuck it up you've pretty much gifted the other team 40 yards.
